Why isn’t this cultural appropriation?

Don’t you dare culturally appropriate, unless we tell you to.

A group of university students have rekindled the heated debate over the acceptance of the Muslim veil in French society as they invited fellow classmates at the prestigious Sciences Po university to try on the garment.

Around a dozen young women wearing colourful Muslim veils paced about nervously in the main hall of Sciences Po university in central Paris on Wednesday morning, bewildered by the numerous journalists on hand for “Hijab Day” and seemingly unprepared to answer questions about an event that had roused such attention.

They huddled around a small table, on top of which a diverse assortment of scarves had been neatly laid out. Propped up against the table a sign written in black marker read, in English, “France got 99 problems but Hijab aint one”, a rap reference that seemed lost on most passersbys.

  1. “I am not Muslim, but I think it’s an opportunity to better understand the issue.” Asked if he would be willing to wear a hijab that day, he replied, “Why not?”

  2. Muslims should come over to my place see what it’s like to be a privileged cracker. No job, 12 year old car, house falling apart at the seams, lots of alcohol and shoot the raghead day on Tuesdays at the range. Other than that, we hide in the basement to avoid being berated by crazy unsolicited attacks from muslims, blacks, gays and feminists in general public because they recognize how much better we are and always will be for no reason at all.

  3. Let’s make it realistic. The guys should quit showering, quit shaving, stick their asses in the air five times a day, wear rags on top of their heads, and boss the women around (no driving, no voting) and give them beatings for showing too much skin or hair.

The hajib is not a veil, even though it can be worn as one. It is just a rag used to cover up the unwashed hair and neck.
I am not aware of anyone trying to ban that, only the veil.

  5. The New York Times published the following opinion on January 14, 2016 written by two Muslim women Asra Q. Nomani and Hala Arafa:

Wearing the Hijab in Solidarity Perpetuates Oppression

In the eight times the word hijab, or a derivative, appears in the Koran, it means a “barrier” or “curtain,” with spiritual, not sartorial, meaning.

Today, well-intentioned women are wearing headscarves in interfaith “solidarity.” But, to us, they stand on the wrong side of a lethal war of ideas that sexually objectifies women as vessels for honor and temptation, absolving men of personal responsibility.

This purity culture covers, segregates, subordinates, silences, jails and kills women and girls around the world.
