The first large scale trail of an HIV vaccine begins in South Africa today. The study is being conducted on 5,400 men and women over a four year period. The vaccine has been especially formulated for that region and researchers hope to lower the chance of contracting the virus to at least 50 percent.
I wonder if this is a double blind study and if subjects are being told they might be getting the placebo?
I hope permanent sterility is an unavoidable side-effect of this vaccine.

Testing in SA? I bet the death rate runs high. I don’t hope that for a second… I hope it brings relief to a continent ravaged by this disease.
The biggest problem is that if the vaccine is only “moderately” successful, it may cause those who take it to stop preventative steps like limiting the number of partners and using condoms.
The way I see it any STD vaccine has to be pretty much 100% effective or risk increasing rather than decreasing infection rates.
It’s a pickle for sure.

I’ve watched too many documentaries of African and Indian men freaking out over using a condom. They just plain refused. How will they stand for vaccinations? They’re so superstitious! Especially the ones trying to make a lot of sons in the family. So yeah, good luck with that.
