No, Trump’s Dismissal of Obama’s Ambassadors Is Not an Unprecedented Crisis

BigGovernment: President-elect Donald Trump’s order for all politically-appointed ambassadors to leave their overseas posts by Inauguration Day is “breaking with decades of precedent by declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods,” according to the New York Times:

The mandate — issued “without exceptions,” according to a terse State Department cable sent on Dec. 23, diplomats who saw it said — threatens to leave the United States without Senate-confirmed envoys for months in critical nations like Germany, Canada and Britain. In the past, administrations of both parties have often granted extensions on a case-by-case basis to allow a handful of ambassadors, particularly those with school-age children, to remain in place for weeks or months.

Mr. Trump, by contrast, has taken a hard line against leaving any of President Obama’s political appointees in place as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20 with a mission of dismantling many of his predecessor’s signature foreign and domestic policy achievements. “Political” ambassadors, many of them major donors who are nominated by virtue of close ties with the president, almost always leave at the end of his term; ambassadors who are career diplomats often remain in their posts.

This is followed by several anecdotes of the personal difficulties facing these ambassadors, who seem inordinately surprised, given that the outcome of the 2016 election was announced two months ago and was a very big story. Why, the New York Times even reported on it!

Also, while the ambassador termination is being treated as a very big story this week, the State Department cable notifying all of the ambassadors was sent on December 23rd, and Inauguration Day is January 20. We’re talking about people with considerable means receiving a month’s formal notice that they need to make new life arrangements, over a month after they knew it would be necessary.  MORE

  1. Ambassadorships have ALWAYS been (with rare exceptions) a whorish perk bestowed upon persons…that THIS is supposed to be “an issue”?!?

They must be clutching their butt pearls!

  2. It might also be worth noting that US Attorneys appointed by a President are usually asked to resign when a new President comes in. Bill Clinton blew out all 97 of George H.W. Bush’s attorneys immediately upon taking office however I gather GW Bush decided to break with tradition and keep them. It’s up to the President. I hope to God Trump kicks Obama’s lawyers out.

  3. The NYT deals in fake news. Brown Eyed Girl has it above. They make an extremely vague reference without bothering to elucidate any signature accomplishment because there were
    EXACTLY NONE.

  4. “When I rented this palace, I was assured that Hillary would extend my lease. I expected a ‘rent’ increase, Arkansas and awl. But, a two month eviction notice is outrageous!”

  5. Ted Osius won’t quit his embassadorship to Vietnam on his own? Fine. Don’t let him back into the US. DJT should simply instruct Tillerson to void Osius’s passport. Oh, and void teh passport of his “husband” Clay Bond, too.

  6. Makes no sense to retain a bunch of Obama loyalists in the Trump administration, and with Barry and Mooch staying in DC to continue to stir the pot of unrest. Like Rat Fink said above, pull it all out by the roots!
    Indeed!

Left still can’t believe what’s happening, can they??!!!

Now, Uncle Al, they’re still Americans. Just put their stuff on the curb, like a normal American eviction, and let them enjoy their more than civil union time in Vietnam.

(Or just drone ’em, if you think Islam is too hard on the gayim.)

  8. hahaha…even more blood thirsty appointees and play-for-pay goons to now be after her Cankleship and Billy Jeff Clinton. No doubt wanting more than just a refund, maybe wanting equal payback in blood.

  9. Let’s see former Governor Blagojevich got 14 years in federal prison for “trying” to sell Illinois’ Senate seat.

Obama actually “sells” Ambassadorships for nearly $1.8 Million dollars on average for each appointment.

Now that’s Pay to Play at the taxpayers expense and no one faces the consequences.

Maybe Blagojevich will get his commutation or a pardon now.

Now, Uncle Al, they’re still Americans. …

You mean like the Americans who get their passports canceled if the IRS, without due process, orders it so? Those Americans?

  11. Lol! Love it. Trump is draining the swamp, MAGA and he hasn’t even been sworn in yet. If the traitorous Barry admin hangers-on thought they were going to escape a Trump clean up, they were greatly mistaken.
