DC: Democratic Del. Eleanor Holmes Norten, who represents the District of Columbia in Congress, forwarded legislation Wednesday to transform the city from a district into a state.
“All that’s left to us, if we want the same birthright that every other American has, is statehood. So, we introduce this bill, we petition the Congress in the 216th year of the fight for equal treatment in our country,” Norton said, according to NBC Washington.
Norton’s Washington, D.C., Admission Act, which she’s introduced every year since she’s served as delegate, has 118 Democratic co-sponsors. If passed, it would turn D.C. into a state with two senators and a representative.
Joining Norton was D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, who also petitioned Congress separately to allow D.C. the same rights as any other state. more
Move. Get out of Washington, D.C. if you want to be in a state.
umm, NO.
NEXT.
Why the big push now? Maybe big plans for that Shadow Senator seat which is open in 2018? I read somewhere today that Barky is about ready to make his grand re-entry onto the DC scene. Maybe this is part of his scheme.
Per OUR Constitution, NOT permitted.
End. Of. Story.
Two more Dem Senators, one of whom would be Mooch? Better keep an eye on these assholes.
Just what D.C. needs, more government bureaucracy. With any luck, they’ll secede from the union.
But, but, but…she won the popular vote!! Riiiigght, let’s make D.C. a state so we have a lock on that state’s electoral vote. Nice try.
@Wyatt, APJ – You’ve got the right idea. Maryland is already pretty much a lost cause except for the far western bit, so I’d like to see the feddles give most of DC to MD. The Constitution (I/8/17) limits the district to no more than 10 miles, and it’s already been shrunk once with a give-back to VA. Washington DC ought to be the Pennsylvania Ave. corridor from the White House to the Capitol, and the fed buildings in SW and the SE corner of NW. Then congress could pass a law (they have the constitutional power) not allowing any residences in the district.
I haven’t looked at the numbers, but worst case is MD gets one more House member, and the best part is that the Senate doesn’t get a new pair of Dems.
A state? Let’s go big and make them a sub-country owned and administered by Cuba and or Venezuela!
“Nuke the entire site from orbit–it’s the only way to be sure …”
izlamo delenda est …
DC is a state……
“State of Confusion”, “Obstruction” and “Corruption”.
A better solution would be to move all government functions out to the mid-West part of the country, disband the District of Columbia and make it a part of the State of Maryland again!
NO.
Considering the reason the “District” of Columbia exists, how can there be any (dare I write it… Constitutional) residential zoned “anywhere,” anywhere in the entire “District”?
I agree with Uncle Al. Federal agencies only., Similar to a military base sans housing.
Uh, Eleanor–no f’in way.
Repeating JustAl,
ummm, NO.
It’s just an attempt for the Dems to pick up two senate seats since most of the denizens of DC vote Democrat. If they want to vote for a Senator so badly then work out a districting where they may live in DC but there votes will be counted in Virginia or Maryland.
Two more democrat senators, plus McCain and Graham, our country would fall right back to the Obama destruction days.
Founders specifically left out DC because it would have too much power. So…NO!
Oh yea, DC 51st, then Philippines #52, Guam #53, Mexico #54, Haiti #55, Puerto Rico #56 then Go to war over the Bahamas to reach the magic number, #57.
NEVAH EVAH TO BE A REALITY !!!
Same old shtick every year.
Always good for a laugh.
Assign it all to Virginia.
VA’s very pro-2A gun carry laws would put a fast stop to the rampant violent street gangs and we’d all be safer.
Maybe Wu can wain some wocks on whem.
DC should not be a state for the same reason referees should not wear team colors.
I have a weird vague memory that “Washington” and the “District of Columbia” are two different entities, hence, it’s written “Washington, DC” and the one is contained within the other. I have seen a map, thereof (which may be a false memory). But, if true, it could be a possible solution to the contrived dilemma – give the part back to Maryland and keep as a District of Columbia, the part that contains the Embassies, &c. Send Norton (I have done work in her office – she is a FUCKING ASSHOLE) back to scrubbing floors at the local McDonald’s.
