California Lawmakers Take Stab At Getting Single Payer Healthcare

Leftist California lawmakers are anti- border wall, and they want single payer that does not exclude illegal aliens. Good luck wit dat, nuckfutz.

NYTs-

Last month State Senators Ricardo Lara and Toni Atkins introduced legislation to replace private health insurance with a publicly funded health care system run by the state government known as a single-payer system.

The bill does not include any details of how the state would pay for the multibillion program, instead simply declaring “it is the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would establish a comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage program and a health care cost control system for the benefit of all residents of the state.”

one candidate running for governor next year plans to make universal health care a centerpiece of the campaign. Earlier this month Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom said he was working with health care experts to craft a plan for a single-payer system. While he was mayor, the city approved a plan to offer universal health care for all of its residents.

Mr. Lara said the Republican defeat in Congress could pave the way for a single-payer system.

“It’s easier to expand health care than make up lost ground as we would have had to do,” he said. “We really have the chance to make universal health care a reality now.”

The proposal differs from existing programs in one big way: It would include all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Obamacare explicitly excluded undocumented immigrants from benefits of the program, though children in California can receive basic coverage even if they are undocumented.

Advocates of a single-payer program argue that it would bring down costs and encourage preventive care. But opponents say there would be less choice and efficiency in medical care, and that taxes would rise significantly for all residents.

  1. How would single payer bring down costs? California legislators propose a health care cost control system, which is essentially price control, and we know from historical data how well price controls work. (Hint: they don’t). And on top of that, California would be adding probably millions of people to health care entitlement which would drive up total costs even if unit costs could be contained.

Cost controls frequently have a magical effect on goods and services – they make them disappear. The probable outcome of these single payer/cost control ideas would be the establishment of a two-tier class system of health care: good heath care for those who can afford the extra cost, and mediocre to substandard health care for everyone else.

  2. What’s that saying? Those who refuse to learn from mistakes of the past are bound to repeat them? How many states have already tried this and failed? On the other hand, the state is bankrupt, why not keep digging? One more thought; anyone wanna take a wild stab at the number of unhealthy vagabonds who are going to pack up and move to Kalifornia? How many doctors are going to leave the state?

  3. these tools never stop…Atkins is one of the worst with pandering to great unsustainable debt…she won’t care, she and her wife will be long gone by the time the chickens come home to roost. Can you imagine the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF SICK AND DYING foreigners who would flock to Mexifornia if they enacted this? It would push the inevitable bankruptcy up by 20 years and turn what is left of this state into a total shithole.

  4. This is a great idea. For California. Single payer health care for EVERYONE. No exceptions. Use the wonderful VA model. All the Hollywood crowd, Silicon Valley billionaires, and especially politicians must use the system. NO PRIVATE HEALTHCARE for ANYONE in California. No leaving the state to get healthcare anywhere else. All healthcare must be free, because Health Care is a Human Right (per Bernie). Let’s see how that works out for them

  5. What the dim-o-crats do not understand is you can’t have both open borders AND a welfare state. If we had ZERO government welfare then it would not matter if the borders were open. You want to come here and work and assimilate- more power to you. There is room and to spare and we are glad to have rouged individualists on board. BUT if you start providing government programs for this and that then there needs to be a head count to understand who is paying in and who is taking out so there is not a collapse of the system.

Put the 2 together and the collapse is possible a matter of months. Anyone who does not understand such simple math should be barred from running for office and be adjudicated too stupid to vote.

  6. You want California to get better. Otherwise the libs can’t survive there, companies can’t survive there, and they all move to other states and screw those states up. See Colorado as latest example.
Lots of business is transferring to my state of Texas and it the Transformation of Texas to Democrat is underway. All the big cities are already gone.

So in the interest of the country we actually want CA to turn it around but that will require Republican control which is never going to happen.

  7. @Bad Brad:

I lived in California for a few decades, and while I relocated recently, it is still a state I loved living in. But over the past several years in particular, California has lurched far to the left, and I don’t see the pendulum swinging back any time soon.

In any event, I learned a long time ago that arguing with committed progressives is a complete waste of time. The progressives I know seem committed to creating a class system with them at the top, and the peasants suffering the idiocy of their policies. Illegal immigration is a prime example; progressives enjoy the cheap labor and political power these folks provide them, but generally hide in their gated communities to avoid any real interaction with them. This site had a couple of posts on Malibu, but what most people don’t realize is that Malibu – due to gated and secure communities, relative inaccessibility and the high cost of living there – is as a practical matter off limit to lower income folk regardless of immigration status. Don’t look for Babs or Martin Sheen to open their properties to illegal immigrants anytime soon.

  8. Just place all doctors and nurses and anybody else in the medical field in Cali. into indentured servitude for five years after completion of school.
You work eighty hours a week treating people, and at the end of your servitude you are allowed to work for pay.

  9. “it is the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would establish a comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage program and a health care cost control system for the benefit of all residents of the state.”

“Advocates of a single-payer program argue that it would bring down costs and encourage preventive care.”

How would it control health care costs? Can you say “rationing?” Or perhaps limiting doctors’ pay to make it so it is not worth anyone’s while to practice medicine. You can not give people carte-blanche and hold costs down. As I recall, Canadas health care system is rated highly among young adults — you know, the ones who don’t have life changing conditions but like going to the ER when they have a hang nail.

And what about malpractice suits under this new California system? Lawyers won’t be able to use them as cash cows as they have in the past because there will be new restrictions on the process, perhaps having a committee — part of the government that pays for the health care — that decides whether a suit could proceed or not.

Of course, the elites who are making these proposals — even if the are part of this system — will have there own elite team of physicians to take care of them and their families.

  10. Wyatt,

Poetic justice would be a split in the state and allowing the commies little social experiment to proceed. WITH NO HELP FROM ANYONE ELSE. Interestingly enough Nigel Farage met with California conservatives and apparently raised some money for the split. Unfortunately this is a separate effort from Jefferson and they want the split length wise. I don’t care how it’s split, but most of the land mass in California is disenfranchised. The Jefferson movement slowly grows momentum.

  11. Brad, what the heck is Nigel Farage doing sticking his nose in this? I saw that a couple days ago and in all honesty it pissed me off. I like the guy, but that is not his place. Maybe I’m wrong on that.

  12. That is what I see too. I’m a bit of an outsider though. Does the proposed boundaries for Jefferson include any NoCal coastline. It would be a shame to give that up.

  13. Then you can all be as proud as the stupid Hosers are proud of their single payer FREE health care Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, EH!
