Trump Tax Reform Being Called a “War on Blue States”

Will Congress kill a $101-billion tax break for Californians?

LA Times-

California and New York receive nearly a third of the deduction’s total value, the Tax Foundation found. Of the top 10 states for the deduction, President Trump carried only three in last fall’s election.

“The only reason to single out state and local taxes is because the Republicans view it as a poke into the eye for the blue states,” said Edward Kleinbard, a USC professor and former chief of staff to Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation. “They view this as a war on blue states and that’s really quite unfair.”

Officials from California and other states whose residents would be hit hard by the loss of the deduction are concerned. They worry about the cost to taxpayers and the broader effect of possibly increasing resistance to state and local tax hikes.

“California’s got a deal that’s working well and allows our state to deliver the services that our citizens need and if you pull something like that it disrupts it,” said Rep. Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena), a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

“I think you’re going to see opposition come out of the woodwork,” he said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has warned that eliminating the deduction would be “devastating” for his state, California and others. New Yorkers used the provision to reduce their taxable income by $68 billion in 2014, according to the Tax Foundation.

  1. I know I’m deplorably stupid. So I’m hoping a Hillary supporter can explain this to me.

We’re all the same. We’re all interchangeable. So we should all be treated the same. Then how is eliminating a tax loophole for everybody, at the same time, an attack against some people, but not others? Or are some people really different? And should be treated differently. Because, you know, I’m down with that. Because I’m deplorable.

  2. War on the blue states? Works for me. Makes up for the last eight years which was a war on the red states. Also this should put an end to that stupid myth made up by huffpoo that California pays out more than it receives.

  3. As Hillary Clinton would say whenever the Democrats screwed the red states: Arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf arf and arf!

  4. Of course this will accelerate the move from high tax to low tax states. The liberal free-lunch idiots don’t learn that government doesn’t have a dime until it takes it from someone who earned it. They bring the same gimme ideology with them, driving up taxes and making their new homes leftist hell holes.

This state will only become golden again after it hits critical mass. And critical mass comes when the liberals can’t feed the beast any longer with our money. We need a tax revolt. One more gas tax might do the trick.

  6. What’s wrong with a war on blue states?

If they’re sucking up too much tax money, cut ’em off. They’re bloated and out of control, and the more they spend, the more they want.

  7. Boot out all the illegal millions. California’s finances and economy will transform for the better overnight.

GAO says Los Angelo’s County alone spends 2 Billion $ a year on illegals, and that’s just cash welfare and food stamp direct payments. Doesn’t count welfare housing, schools, Medicaid, social services, jails, yada yada.
The real cost of illegals is staggering. As they self deport it will become obvious they were 90% of your problems.
With their voting bloc gone, you can remove the Reconquista elected vermin who’ve been running your state for the sole benefit of the illegals.
New York State will have a similar revelation.

  8. It is especially urgent to have conservatives in control when the blue states and cities start going bankrupt – so that there won’t be any bailouts.

    It’s coming soon.
