Puerto Rico Votes For Statehood

The Hill-

Puerto Rico voted overwhelmingly in favor of statehood on Sunday in a referendum that begins the steps toward sending representatives to Washington, D.C.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 97 percent voted for statehood, though turnout was only about 23 percent. One and a half percent voted for independence from the United States, according to Decision Desk HQ, while 1.3 percent voted to keep the current status of a territory of the United States.

Puerto Rico will now put its “Tennessee plan” into action, meaning its governor will choose two senators and five representatives to go to Washington, D.C., to request statehood.

President Trump signaled during his presidential campaign that he is open to Puerto Rico officially becoming a state.

Puerto Rico previously voted in favor of becoming a state in 2012, but statehood opponents said the voter turnout was not high enough to accurately reflect will of the Puerto Rican people. Some fear that they will make the same case this time around.

40 Comments on Puerto Rico Votes For Statehood

  1. They want statehood because they are over $70 billion in debt, and they think that by becoming the 51st state, they will no longer be on the hook for the money. They think that the US will take over their debt.

Fuck them. There are more PRs in the US than in PR. We don’t need their debt added to ours, we have enough of that shit already. For my money, just take away their status as a US territory and let them declare bankruptcy.

  2. The people of the existing 57 (sic) states have no say in this?
If the citizens of Qatar voted to become a US State….
if the people of Libya voted to become a US State….
    WTF.
We have no say in this? Bullshit

Puerto Rico booted us from using our navy base there many years back. Roosevelt Roads. Now they demand statehood?

I won’t be changing my flag to 51 stars in my
    Lifetime.

  3. Only 23% turnout?

    Call them “State Of Apathy”.

No thanks. Try again in 30 years when and if you’ve paid off your debts and can feed yourselves.

  4. Once they booted us from Roosevelt Roads they sealed their fate. Really? Fuck the USA. That’s fine. You lost a lot of dough, probably the amount you’re short now.

You’re on your own. If we need to take back our base in the future we will. But for our own national security. Not yours. We can roll you any time we like.

A state? That’s hubris. We need you to join our union like I need my in laws moving into the spare bedroom.

  5. PHenry.
Gotta disagree. If it wasn’t for their Socialist way that could have become the offshore manufacturing destination of the USA. We don’t need them

  6. PHenry

I guess I’m not really disagreeing with you. Just trying to point out they had a awesome financial way out. They didn’t take it because they are in reality socialists.

    > Give them independence. Cut them loose.

But, Tony! What will happen to the millions and millions of Puerto Ricans trapped in the United States? What will their path to citizenship be?

  8. Well Brad. We should be able to pick up that island for pennies on the dollar soon. Just no additional stars on the flag. Although I’d give Vermont to Canada to free up some room. But not until Puerto Rico gets its shit together.

Hell. I’m in favor of going back to about 30 stars. Thereabouts. Kind of kidding. But mostly not. Most of the original 13 colonies are undeserving and their forefathers would be horrified that their efforts resulted in collective insanity.

They are a national embarrassment and each are representing on our flag as both a star and a stripe.

  9. They assume that 23.5% of the population actually represents the full population???? If the turnout over a matter as important as statehood is so low then it’s not likely that important to the vast majority of the people. It’s more likely that their debt is the reason for moving to statehood. It should be made clear to them that should they get statehood that whatever debt they’ve accumulated remains with the them.

  10. I was referring to the 13 stripes of the original colonies mostly. The Carolinas might be the lone holdouts now.
But they’ve been overrun by carpetbaggers looking for cheap real estate dragging their liberal sensibilities along with them.

It’s a terrible thing to behold.

  11. If I could draw a picture of this crap, I’d show the 50 stars that represent the U.S. with the oversized Puerto Ricans sucking on the American teat and asking/demanding for a larger nipple.

  12. Once they closed Rosey Roads, they cut their own throats.
    Phuckem.
I don’t want Guam to become a state, then I’d have to pay
more taxes, phuck that!!! I’m actually de’linked from the IRS
and my record actually states, that if they are contacted by
any agency or person in my name, to question it as I’m a Guam resident and by law do not have to listen to the US IRS unless I move to the mainland.

  13. Oh, HELL NO!

FUCK Puerto Rico. Give it Cuban Statehood, instead – or independence – or give it the fuck back to Spain.

Talk about treating hemorrhoids with ground glass!
