Nature watchers in Canada have observed a red tail hawk being raised by a pair of bald eagles. Normally, eagles prey on hawks, seeing them as unwanted competition, but in this case the parents are treating the foundling as one of their own.
Named ‘Spunky’ by observers, the orphaned hawk has successfully fledged but still returns to the nest for a share of the fish the adult eagles bring home.
Nature is So Entertaining !
Those Eagles are just feeding him until he’s big enough to eat. Eagles in the western fly way follow the main migration of water foul down through California eventually into Mexico. So if your a Cali Duckahaolic you see a lot of them. Amazing birds.
Ebby buddy needs a red tailed step child!
@Bad Brad: I think we live near each other (within 50 miles), and we have them here at the lake. Not sure if they’ve nested here this year as there’s too much construction going on down below where they typically nest in the high tension towers. Bald eagles are opportunists, they’re almost like turkey vultures. They will eat anything – dead or alive. In Alaska, they hang out at the dumps and hundreds can be seen foraging on whatever.
My husband once watched an eagle pick apart a dead Canadian goose on the shore of his lake house. He said it was amazing to watch. We are in Western WA.
