RIP Mort Walker – IOTW Report

RIP Mort Walker

I feel guilty that I hadn’t known Mort Walker, 94, was still with us.

The WWII vet who entertained many with his tales of the hapless Beetle Bailey was a champion and supporter of

other artists, having founded the Museum of Cartoon Art in Connecticut.

  1. When I used to read newspapers the comics were always something I enjoyed. Beetle Bailey was one of my favorites. RIP, Sir and thank you for supporting others in that field.

  2. During one submarine patrol it seemed like the cooks served some kind of potpie every third day. About 20x to often.

During off crew I found and kept a BB comic stripe featuring Cookie.
He had cooked something that didn’t look edible. Then said, “If the food looks inedible put a crust over it I always say.” I kept it and taped it to the wall outside the radio shack, where the waiting line formed, during the next patrol the first time they served potpie again. Everyone agreed that was the purpose of the crust.

  3. Lol, never had a pot pie on a boat, that would scare me!

But I tell you, fried hamsters, foreskins n gravy, and nairobi trail markers were great👍

Pizza night has morphed to wing and pizza, but still strong.

  4. Ah. Well as best I can recall on that next patrol potpie was only served once, and never again on patrols after that. I like to think that somehow the BB comic stripe posting sent the message. No thanks.
