Florida Senate Committee Approves Measures To Allow Teachers To Carry Guns

Senate committee approves proposal to arm teachers, rejects assault gun ban.

Tallahassee-

More than two hundred orange-T-Shirt clad Rally in Tally Floridians filled a Senate committee room a half hour before a hearing on a package of gun control measures. They were a remnant of an estimated 1,200 demonstrators who marched on the state Capitol Monday where lawmakers began considering the first set of restrictions on gun ownership in 20 years.

Lawmakers have until March 9 to respond to the Valentine Day massacre at a Parkland high school. The proposals expected to move this week in House and Senate committees would arm teachers with weapons, make it easier to take into custody people suspected of mental illness, impose a three-day cooling off period and a minimum age for weapons purchase, and spend more money on mental health programs in schools.

  1. The article mentions only “teachers”. That can be a pretty broad word. Does it mean K-12 teachers? Probably not, since that is a federal issue, not state. “Teachers” could mean college and university instructors, which is within the authority of a state. I’m interested in knowing just where Florida lawmakers stand on this.

  2. How is teacher a federal issue? They are hired by local school boards, in state retirement system and certified by state. Not to mention the 50 states all have dept of education’s. The real question is why is there a federal dept of education that does not teach any child.

  3. Awesome! Can’t wait to lube my rifles with media tears, the next time a teacher stops a “precious, little, 18 year old gorilla snowflake,” with THEIR legally toted firearm. >:->

  4. Might want to try to find some Deputies who take that “Protect and Serve” stuff seriously. Not just a bunch of grifters looking to shake down the drug-runners.

(to dream … the impossible dream …)

  5. Remove all restrictions of people who have successfully passed CCW course & FBI background check – from churches, schools and public buildings – then make “Gun-free zones” liable for what tends to happen in “gun free zones”.
See how quickly this bullshit comes to an end.

  6. I am curious as to what real successes the gun control movement has had. My sense is that more and more schools are allowing staff to carry firearms, that laws are generally being reduced. I bet that each major incident leads to more people carrying, to more schools allowing carry. Of course there is a constant battle, and thanks to the media it always sounds like our side is losing, but I think generally things are improving on the gun rights side of things.
I think we have some major problems resulting from lack of family and faith which are leading to more mass shootings. The trend has been upward even when overall murders were dropping.

  7. “My sense is that more and more schools are allowing staff to carry firearms”

Not in California. Jerry Brown signed into legislation that only allows school shooters to be armed. I’m finding only about 5% of people know about this.

  8. BB; nobody knows because of the media who cow-tows to sacramento. That article you mentioned the other day about people losing guns for hate crimes was never mentioned on the news.

Legislation signed into law that nobody voted on. They just impose their agenda on us. Check out the next 10 proposed gun laws in response to a Florida School District and Sheriffs Department totally dropping the ball. “We can’t protect you but we’re taking your guns”.

  10. Yay!

Next! Form a school rifle team and wed it to a scholastic competition. Biathalon-esque.

Blam blam blam! Do this calculus problem in your head now and give the answer verbally. Now, RUN to your next target station!

    Definitely a timed event. lol

    hey, I live in Texas.

It was more like that than not, not so long ago. We had a rifle team in my high school in the early 70’s.

It didn’t appeal to me personally because I had been shooting on a regular basis since I turned 6 and had an eagle-eye reputation with my .22 . When you’re already hunting successfully for years, it’s hard to sit through a beginner’s class without your attention drifting off.

But these days are different. Not a lot of kids with .22s in their rear windows in the school parking lot. Too much ignorance and too little experience. We need to bring HS rifle teams back.

  11. The irony of teachers needing to be armed is that often times teachers are being attacked in their classrooms by their own students. Teachers need to be able to defend themselves and the students need to know their teachers are armed and able. All teachers should be trained in gun use and by law be allowed to carry guns in every state.

  12. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 makes this a federal issue. Sponsored by then-Sen. Joe Biden and signed into law by then-President George H.W. Bush the law makes it illegal for anyone “to knowingly possess a firearm” within 1,000 feet of a school zone.

  13. Exactly CC. It’s not like I spend a whole lot of time at my kids’ school, but it is annoying to have to lock my gun up in my car before going to any activity there. Armed, law abiding citizens are the answer to these mass shootings.
