This is more ironic than you might think. Shortly after declaring war on Germany, and the loss of gear upon departing France, the British had to use broomsticks’s for weapons when practicing drill and other military maneuvers. The worm has now fully turned!
When Camp Rustimiyah (the officers training center in Iraq) was reopened it was not uncommon to see Iraq troops drilling with tree branches masquerading as weapons. I should have taken photos.
