Foxconn To Gift $100 Million To UW Madison

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics contract manufacturer, has pledged to donate $100 million to the University of Wisconsin – Madison for an engineering and research facility that will partner between the two institutions. The facility will be built in Racine, near the future home of Foxconn’s $10 billion flat screen plant. The gift will also fund a new research facility for the UW’s engineering school.

“Foxconn would not be obligated to complete the $100 million gift unless UW-Madison raises the same amount in the area of engineering, computer and data science, as well as human health. The $200 million is part of the university’s larger $3.2 billion fundraising campaign that is in its final two years.” More

  1. Seems reasonable, spend $100 million to insure state residents don’t oppose the $10 billion facility. Actually, given how the president is unafraid to wade into international trade on behalf of the American people, building a manufacturing facility in the States seems like a sound decision.

  2. This is a win-win-win for Wisconsin, Foxconn and the U.S. generally. We get mfg back in an area that was thought long gone, we get the tax base, people get a hand up to learn skills for skilled employment. What’s not to love about that? And why, for Heaven’s sake, did we ever just accept the idea that America is no longer a maker of products? We’ve always made durable goods. Now if we can just keep the druggies out of the equation, “Made in the USA” can have meaning again. Nothing quite like getting the pride back, I say!

  3. Hmmm….I wonder how all the local lefties who have been crying foul about Foxconn’s tax breaks and how it’s “just more crappy low wage jobs” will feel about this? I think this tosses a bit of a wrench into their argument now that the Berkeley of Wisconsin is going to be getting such a big chunk if they can raise the other half. Democrats here are fiercely loyal to the university system, and something tells me this will confound them a bit trying to reconcile what opinion to hold.
