It’s Good For What Ails You

I’m not sure if the author of this piece is recommending whiskey as a remedy for a cough, fever or just plain body aches, but I’m sure that with the proper dosage all those ills that may be visited upon you this winter will be forgotten. More

  1. Brad – Have you ever tried a shot of Drambuie poured over vanilla ice cream? Very, very nice!

The standard cough and sore throat alleviator in our family (and many others as well) is the Hot Toddy. Recipes differ, but mine is whiskey (rye for me), lemon juice, and a little honey. Sip it hot, duh.

  2. Drambuie, that stuff will kill you. When I was 18-19 I bartended and someone came in and ordered a Rusty Nail. I thought hey, that sounded pretty cool, so I had a few. I’m not sure if it was the Scotch or the Drambuie but I don’t have anything good to say about either.

  3. The most horrible liquor I’ve tried is Absinthe. I don’t understand how Europeans in the late 19th century got so enamored of it, but it’s probably because they’re Europeans.

  4. What ales me is ale. I love the stuff but have pretty much given it up (along with all grains). Same with Irish whiskey (I won’t drink any other kind of whiskey).

Now, wine, I’ve recently (re)decided, is medicinal – and good for the heart and blood and digestion. Plus, it’s agreeing with me.

  5. Give me a good, sturdy German beer any day. That’s one thing they really do well. König Pilsener, Spaten Oktoberfest, Radeberger (in the light side), Paulaner Oktoberfest (in the heavier side).

Some domestic favorites – Magic Hat #9, Brooklyn Lager, Two Roads Ok2berfest, Cisco Pale Ale – All good!

For the stronger stuff, a little Bushmills Irish Whiskey or Lagavulin 16 single malt $68 at Wegmans, which is a deal. Maybe I’ll get one for the holidays.

    Cheers all!

  6. When young, Mom always gave us 4 Kids a table spoon of Old Crow with sugar mixed in. I generally worked for colds. That bottle of Old Crow lasted for about 9 or 10 years (medicinal purposes only).

As adults, none of us ever drank whiskey.

  8. Brad, lucky for you they didn’t have any Scotch on hand. I’ll never have another Rusty Nail. That’s one thing about being a bartender at such a young age, you end up trying things you will never drink again.

LOL. Just Fxcking with everyone. Ain’t no doubt I love the stuff, but interestingly enough all my neighbors tongues swell when they’re drinking that shit and can’t talk. It’s Hilarious. I’ll send video.

  10. @Cynic – I’m EXTREMELY fond of The Macallan 18. Best whiskey I’ve ever had. At that price, though, I buy one bottle every five years or so, and it lasts me one or two years. It comes out only on the most special of occasions!

  11. Not that it’s whiskey, but I have a Cosmopolitan recipe that will get your attention. In quantity order of 1,2,3, and 4, use lime juice, cranberry cocktail, triple sec, and vodka. Your head will be numb after one drink.
