If he was on the up-and-up, and I think he was, de Klerk deserves high praise for his foresight in getting rid of South Africa’s nuclear warheads before his country descended back into tribal savagery.
Not many remember that Botha’s regime had constructed a half dozen bombs by 1989 (and were working on #7) and they were dismantled after de Klerk signed the nonproliferation pact in 1991.
