Big problem facing the Green New Deal: A lack of power lines to deliver wind and solar

WaEx: The Green New Deal would require an overhaul of the transmission lines that deliver wind and solar power, a major logistical obstacle to the progressive plan for radically revamping the economy to address climate change.

The Green New Deal’s plan to ramp up federal funding for wind and solar to reach 100 percent renewable or clean electricity won’t be sufficient without addressing transmission lines, which often meet political opposition at the local, not federal, level.

The Green New Deal resolution proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., does not explicitly mention transmission lines, although it does call generally for major repairs and upgrades to the nation’s infrastructure.

“It’s not getting enough attention from policymakers,” said Rob Gramlich, president of Grid Strategies LLC. “People often want to believe the myth you can get to high renewable energy without transmission networks. Unfortunately, that is not going to work.”

Transmission lines are critical to transporting electricity from places, typically rural areas, that have an abundance of wind or solar to consumers in population centers that don’t generate significant renewable electricity.

“There are major areas of the country where we have significant wind and solar resources that cannot reach market,” said Jeff Dennis, managing director and general counsel of Advanced Energy Economy.  MORE

  1. Antimatter/Matter reaction yields 100% energy
Feeding fuel into a black hole yields 35% energy
    Fission/Fusion 15% energy
    Fossil fuels 10% energy
    Solar 2-3%
    Wind 1.5%
Now when you make solar and wind work at over 10% he world will beat a path to your door
Until then, go sit down with your hippie bullshit

  2. No problem at all, you just create Power Exchanges. Different power levels for different needs. Like Gold Level, Silver + so on. And everybody can just exchange it. What part of that do capitalists not understand?

  3. There will be wires and grids all over the back yards, fields, etc.
Enviro nuts complain that animals can’t get around pipelines (they’re above ground or under ground)
but don’t care that animals get caught in windmills, burned by mirrors and other assorted idiocy.

  4. Tesla claimed he could transmit electrical
    energy on radio waves…
I read somewhere several years ago that
NASA had transmitted 75 watts of energy from
one point to the next in space over microwaves.I think it was
    very inefficient.

  6. I just read somewhere that this “Green New Deal” was plagiarized verbatim from a United Nations Resolution/Demand/proclamation/
by come communist jerkoff back in 1989.
I can’t keep up with this shit.
I don need no stinkin’ gas, I use da bus.
I don nee no lectricty, I use the subway

And phuck planes too, I’ll take a taxi and my govnmnt will pay for the ride, even to college, an pay fo the college too.
Just a simple rant, Sorry guys. I need a drink.

  7. AOC: “What we need is a quantum leap in energy transmission!”

Reporter: “What do you mean, “quantum?”

AOC: “You know, like way cheaper super wires and like high tech transmission technology like they started experimenting with in like Venezuela before like the oil companies shut it down thanks to Trump.”

    Reporter: (Stares silently, mouth open…)

  9. The left is screaming about all of the eminent domain needed to build a border wall. Imagine all of the eminent domain required to place in all these power lines from the south to the north, coast-to-coast?!
Also, are they planning on using gold as a conductor for all these power lines? Because as it makes it way from Georgia to Maine there may not be any power remaining.

  10. We will also need 500.000 acres for solar and wind farms, about the size of California, Texas. and Florida. No people only energy generation equipment. AOC is that even smart enough to propose anything a dumb. She is kind of a one trick pony.

Right off the top of my head, I’d say reality.
That, and physics and money, just for starters.

  13. Existing electrical transmission and distribution lines are largely out of date and in need of serious upgrade and expansion. I just got off of a transmission job and we were finding poles from the 50’s -these have a typical lifespan of about 10 to 15 years. The place that I worked before that had an equipment yard at the big downtown STL office for Ameren who runs most of the electrical utilities in MO, half of their distro poles between us were marked out of service, they were like that for 2 years, a year later they still are.
