The Best Songs Of All Time?? – IOTW Report

The Best Songs Of All Time??

Here is the list according to some site called TheDelite

I’m only going to call out the songs that would never in a million years be on my Top 25 list. (Just because I don’t call out a song it doesn’t mean it’s on my list, it’s just that it’s not a definite “no way.” )

Feel free to disagree in the comments. (If we all had the same taste it would be a boring world.)

25. ‘Purple Haze’ — The Jimi Hendrix Experience

24. ‘London Calling’ — The Clash

Nope. The staccato rhythm stinks and the accent in the vocal annoys me. By the time we get to that idiotic bird call I’m done with it.

23. ‘What A Wonderful World’ — Louis Armstrong

He sings like he has throat cancer, and, for some reason, being strangled as well.

22. ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ — Sam Cooke

21. ‘The Sound Of Silence’ — Simon & Garfunkel

20. ‘A Day In The Life’ — The Beatles

19. ‘My Generation’ — The Who

18. ‘Light My Fire’ — The Doors

17. ‘What’d I Say’ — Ray Charles

16. ‘Paint It Black’ — The Rolling Stones

No. Just no. The sitar and Indian scales are forced and make little sense. The recording is bad and Charlie Watts’ drumming is ambitious, but bad.

15. ‘Respect’ — Aretha Franklin

14. ‘All Along The Watchtower’ — The Jimi Hendrix Experience

13. ‘What’s Going On’ — Marvin Gaye

12. ‘Stairway To Heaven’ — Led Zeppelin

11. ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ — Bob Dylan

10. ‘God Only Knows’ — The Beach Boys

9. ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ — Bob Dylan

Repetitive. Dylan puts the harm in harmonica, and I don’t like songs that suggest I need to think about how I don’t think.

8. ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ — The Beatles

7. ‘Johnny B. Goode’ — Chuck Berry

6. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ — Nirvana

5. ‘Good Vibrations’ — The Beach Boys

4. ‘Yesterday’ — The Beatles

3. ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ — The Rolling Stones

2. ‘Hey Jude’ — The Beatles

1. ‘Imagine’ — John Lennon

You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m a big Lennon fan, and this is a song that gets instantly snapped off as soon as I hear the opening chords, chiefly because the lyrics are progressive socialist crapola.

Imagine no possessions says the man with more possessions then you could ever IMAGINE.

  1. Top songs cherry picked from the record industry engineered so called Top 40 of years gone by.
Can you even count how many times poor old Keith and Mick have had to play ‘Satisfaction’ for instance? Good song for its day. Now it’s a museum piece on their mandatory playlist. God how they must hate that song.

  2. “Really.. No CCR!”

Eh. I used to like them when I was a kid. Now they’re like the ’60s proto-Jimmy Buffet to me. Please tell me nothing of his made the list. I didn’t have time to slog through it. Anyway, it looks like BFH culled the herd quite well for my tastes. I know he’d have ripped Margaritaville out by the roots.

  3. I agree with most of you. I wouldn’t have put any of these on my top 25 list.

Give me Yes, Genesis, Moody Blues, Mozart, Santana, Andy Williams, Chicago, Darius Rucker, Steve Winwood, Dire Straits …

    15
  4. I wonder how much money was paid to have most of these losers added to that list. Reminds me of the time some bozos picked Barack Obama as the fourth or fifth best U.S. President of all time.

    Gag me with a tune.

  5. Great choices all, but here’s one that always puts a smile on my face!
    (Not only that, but it’ll give a dumbed-down, self-absorbed, spoon-fed, celebrity-obsessed, White guilt-ridden, Birkenstock-wearing, bottled-water-drinking, kumbaya-singing, Rainbow Plantation, Xanax-disabled, COEXIST bumper-sticker, Politically Correct Liberal child a heart attack!)
Besides, we’re going there this weekend!

  6. 2. ‘Hey Jude’ — The Beatles

    1. ‘Imagine’ — John Lennon

HATE those songs. Do you hear? HAAAATE. lol
And I have tragic memories of being in some sort of school festivities where we had to dance all folksy to
    Obladi-Oblada.

” Did “all time” start in the 1950s? ”

Not for me. I also hate everything from the opera “La Gioconda”. 🙂

  7. One thing consistent with Delite, every performer and band whose song made the list has recorded at least one other song that is better than what Delite selected.

    7
  8. More like a list of the most overplayed, format radio, pop garbage. Nothing I hate more then format radio stations that play the same damn song every 45 minutes, payola is still alive and well.

    2
  9. And yet. Not a single Yoko Ono song. How are we to take this list seriously?

I miss Yoko making noises like she’d stuck her reptilian tongue into a light socket.

Now THAT was music! No. It was Art. No. It was music art. You got your peanut butter on my chocolate.
I just love unintelligible shrieking. I could play it all night. High pitched shrieking is kind of my thing.

And Yoko didn’t make the cut. Sad.

  10. Sultans of Swing and no Dire Straits, a List without one of the greatest bands (and guitarists) OF ALL TIME, is NO list.

And yes I DIG the Beatles, but list after list after list along with SWTH being ‘the best song ever’ getting sick and tired of these on going LISTS. Imagine your ass! For instance any song from Rubber Soul is better than that commie song, or any other one on that list.

    Run For YOUR Life.

@ Uncle Al – yes. John Hurt influenced a may geetarists.

    @ Meerkat – yes!

The Crickets. – started it and Buddy was the KING NOT ELvis.

    The Moody Blues.
    The Kinks.
    The Animals
    The Yardbirds
    The Dave Clark Five!
    The Rascals.
    The Boxtops.

    That list is a DISGRACE.

  11. Hell, I’d take Janis Joplin’s ‘I Need A Man To Love’ over 95% of these tunes

    25. Purple Haze ~ “ ‘cuse me while I kiss this guy”
    24. Agree w/ Fur
    23. nice, but not Top 25
    22. another non-Top 25
    21. never was a Simon & Carbunkle fan
    20. guess one could make an argument
    19. no ‘effin’ way … ever!
    18. Not one of my bands …did some passable stuff … one of their better hits
    17. hit the road .. .jack
    16. one of the easier songs to play on guitar … a fave of garage bands, back in the day … the Stones have better. I’d pick ‘The Last Time’ over this one … can’t believe they didn’t list a no-brainer like ‘Gimme Shelter’
    15. can’t argue w/ this pick … Otis Redding’s song done good
    14. I get it … Hendrix
    13. ‘Sexual Healing’ was better, but I get that Gaye should get a nod
    12. ‘Stairway To Heaven’ — “If I have to sing this one more time, I’m going to kill myself” ~ Robert Plant
    11. sigh … I guess
    10. no
    9. “Repetitive. Dylan puts the harm in harmonica, and I don’t like songs that suggest I need to think about how I don’t think.” spot on Fur
    8. still love this one when it’s played … great cultural touchstone … where were you when you heard this opening guitar jangle?
    7. another cultural nod, but too highly rated
    6. gee … don’t hear this one played too much anymore … smells like spirit of the moment … maybe some ‘Pearl Jam’? … yeah, didn’t think so (btw, like Pearl Jam; not their idiot politics, but their songs)
    5. decent song much too highly rated … top 100 … maybe
    4. ok … a bit too high
    3. “I just can’t see us when we’re 40 doing ‘Satisfaction’ ~ Mick Jagger
    2. so many better Beatle songs to choose from
    1. Oh, Hell No!

if you are truly talking about the Top 25 of all time & don’t include anything classical, w/ no early R&B references, Country references, any Presley, early rock, your list is just personal preferences … & subject to complete & deserved ridicule

    2
  12. Nirvana? Fuck that.

Where’s Cream’s live Spoonful from Wheels of Fire?

Where’s Pressed Rat and Warthog? 🙂

Where’s Jefferson Airplane, and Joe Cocker?

Fleetwood Mac, Hypnotized? Robin Trower? Chicken Shack?

Blackfoot? Pure Prairie League? The Outlaws? The Electric Flag? Procol Harum? Buffalo Springfield? CSN&Y?

I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

  13. The last band I ever really liked after an illustrious history of it was Extreme. Not for “More Than Words” although what the lyrics really mean is funny and a statement. Going to see them soon. As a musician (among other things) I really appreciate composition and content over a catchy beat.

Always been big on James Brown and really the whole Motown thing. Surprised Aerosmith didn’t get a mention along with Yes, Queen and Kansas. I think my favorite tune ever was “No One Like You” by the Scorpions.

    Like it loud. 😆

  14. Best songs ≠ popular recordings
—Dylan, Lowell George, John Hyatt, Rodney Crowell, Paul Weller, Marshall Crenshaw, et mult al WROTE GREAT SONGS

    As for recordings,
no Tom Petty, The Band, Temptations, Doobie Brothers, Prince, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Steely Dan, Robert Palmer, Brooks & Dunn, James Brown?? hell, Junior Brown!

    1
  15. Where the hell is Madman Across the Water?

And Badge? And Traffic? John Hooker’s Hobo Blues?

Muddy Waters Folk Singer? Paul Butterfield’s East West?

And how in the hell do you miss Dean Martin?

And Dave Brubeck? Shit, 40 Days and Take Five are masterpieces.
