2020 Dem Candidate Delaney Announces Mandatory National Service Plan

OAN: 2020 hopeful John Delaney recently unveiled a new plan to institute mandatory national service if he is elected president. On Sunday, the former Maryland congressman announced the mandatory national service plan, which would require every American over the age of 18 to serve the country for at least one year.

Under the plan, Americans would choose from one of four options: the military, a community service program, a new national infrastructure apprenticeship program, or a newly created climate corps. more

  1. Free country? Free to follow your dreams and the pursuit of happiness? All of these “programs” other than the military would be left wing thought camps. Communism anybody?

  2. I watched him talk this scheme up recently and was horrified at the potential for abuse. Why not come up with a proposal to cut spending and save the entitlement programs you already have committed us to?

  3. I am announcing my own Mandatory National Service Plan which is intended to promote a sense of self worth, combat climate change, solve the youth obesity problem, prevent nuclear war, and end the heartbreak of psoriasis. Under my plan, I intend to outlaw carbon polluting farm equipment and replace this equipment with inner city youths – primarily from ghettos or barrios. Armed government agents will seek out these individuals (the fact that they are all black or hispanic is just an unhappy coincidence – I can’t be racist because I am a progressive Democrat), and volunteer them for work in the fields doing important things like picking cotton and harvesting vegetables and….well, maybe just picking cotton and harvesting vegetables. And if that isn’t enough of a character builder, these young folks get to live in barracks and eat cheap food and learn inspiring spiritual songs while working dusk to dawn. Since they will be provided with housing, food and clothing, we see no need for actual wages which would just be spent on drugs and alcohol anyway.

The term of service would be somewhere around a lifetime. But everything they need (as determined by me) would be free, so it’s a win-win situation. And if I have more volunteers than I need, I can sell…err, hire out the extra volunteers to other agricultural moguls.

This idea should be heartily endorsed by the progressive Democrats. Forward into the past!

  4. Now, lets not get all het up over it until we give it some thought.
National service is a good thing.
Lazlo was in the California Conservation Corps back in ’81-82. The advertisement said: Hard work, Low Pay, Miserable Conditions. They delivered.
For me it was a springboard to Forestry. I had a great time, and met great people.
The Infrastructure folks can build bike paths off the highways medians and get those bicycle asswipes out of my way. They can do brush and weed removal and pick up trash along the road.
Put an Urban organization in place and deal with graffiti and blight.
The climate brigade can clean feces off the sidewalks so it doesn’t get into the storm drains, and then into the ocean and trash, pick up trash forever.
Now, if you have a steady job, stay there. If you’re in college with a real major, stay there. But if you are holding up the porch posts, you can shovel.

  5. Whilst Americans would be toiling away for the government, illegal aliens would still be kicking it in their Section 8 housing, getting SNAP, free medical care and in state tuition at colleges. Sounds fair.

  6. climate corps? Herding unicorns and lassoing rainbows!

Or shoveling shit, picking up bodies and needles from the streets of the demoncrat created third world American cities?

Or maybe serving in the demoncrat pedophile corps or serving as a congressional intern sex slave.

    Damn demoncrats.

  7. I’m with Lazlo. You don’t go to college at 18, unless you’re stupid smart.

You have to do some real hard work first. Clean shit, build shit, maintain shit, defend shit, kill rats in Baltimore. I don’t care so long as it is productive work.

Then, and only then, will you be provided with a certificate that allows you to select basket weaving for $70k/year as a major.

    College problem fixed!

Kids entering the workforce with skills, no degree and no debt! The ones who choose to use their certificate of higher education, do so at their own peril.

  8. old_oaks is in for some sticker shock. Hot programmers at Amazon start in the high 100’s and average over 250K/year real quick. Yeah, tell those DBMS whizkids they gotta shovel shit in Louisiana before they can get rich! 😀

  9. @Lazlo, @old_oaks – My objection is not to the value of the work or the benefits to the “service” kids. My objection is that those who don’t want to participate will be forced to, and if they fight that they will arrested, and if they fight that they will be killed.

Not to mention that pesky 13th Amendment.
