China Taps Its Strategic Pork Reserve

BBC

A state-backed body will auction 10,000 tonnes of frozen pork from its strategic reserves on Thursday.

China, the world’s biggest producer and consumer of pork, has struggled to control the spread of the disease.

Beijing has slaughtered more than 1 million pigs in a bid to contain the incurable pig virus. The highly contagious disease is not dangerous to humans, but has hit China’s crucial pig-farming industry and driven up costs for consumers.

Pork prices jumped 46.7% in August on a year earlier, official figures showed.

In a bid to stabilise prices, a state-backed group that manages the pork reserves will auction imported frozen pork from countries including Denmark, France, the US and UK.

Only 300 tonnes will be sold to each bidder at the auction. More

  1. I was in China in 2004 and in an agricultural area. The soil for wheat production was by manual plow pulled by oxen. The harvested wheat was spread on tarps on the side of the road to dry and have the chaff removed by passing vehicles. I kid you not. China is filthy. In the rural areas, the pollution was so bad you did not see blue sky. China is going to have a lot of very hungery people if they don’t buy agricultural products from the US. HONG Kong may just the tip of the iceberg.

  2. Well its’ nice to know that other countries are getting extra pork sales. Kind of too bad that Canada’s been cut off from soybean and pork sales (and just about all other economic activity with China) because Canada are still holding the VP of Finance of Huwai electronics based on the request by the US for extradition. However, the problem seems to be that the US State or DOJ hasn’t yet shipped the needed data to present to a court. I think come January or February it will be a whole year that we’ve been waiting. In the meantime the Chinese have arrested two Canadian businessmen for espionage and changed a 15 year sentence to the death penalty for a Canadian convicted of drug smuggling. At some point the Canadian authorities are just going to have to let her go then the DOJ will start bitching. Sometimes the view from the middle isn’t all that much fun.

  4. Abigail, I lived in the Philippines. I just got used to it. Ate from the street carts with the best of them. I try to be a bit adventurous. However, these days, I’m a bit more attracted to vegetables and dairy.

  5. This and the realization
that not only China faces crop shortages
    the whole world is facing
    severe crop shortage

    And China wants to threaten
and oppose agreement on imports ?

    When China will
    NOT
be able to feed their people
    next year ?

And Iran will have to feed their people
    with oil and sand ?

And the MSM wants you to think that
    President Trump must surrender
to these pigs regardless that they will
    hate us even more afterward.

President Trump is willing to talk with them.

They, arrogantly, will not talk with the President.

The MSM wants you to think that President Trump
    is at fault.

The MSM is the propaganda arm of the democrat party

The democrat party is the COMMUNIST party !

  6. “Activists” here complain about the “inhumane” conditions of an industrial farm.
It’s those inhumane conditions that have lead to the highest and healthiest food production of the world.
Trichinosis, once the bane of chefs who wanted to serve pork while it’s still pink, now do so.
The coddled children of the US are ignorant and wracked with hubris.
Can you imagine how different they would feel if they actually learned about the Socialist empires they so stupidly admire?
“Antifa”, in ignorance, wave the China flag, Chinese, seeking to keep their liberty, wave the American flag.

  7. @KatDog; It really doesn’t matter whether Trudeau is an asshole (he is and is likely to be gone in less then 30 days) you don’t dump a friend and ally into the middle of a trade/power fight then just leave them there to be beaten like a pinata. The US asked for the extradition and promised to provide enough proof to warrant a trial then went radio silent for almost a year and stood back and watched Canada-China relations go down the tube. They watched while Canadians were arrested on trumped up charges and another had a 15 year drug smuggling charge suddenly and without reason changed to the death penalty, they watched while all economic ties (development money from Canada to China and vice versa, joint ventures) were cut they watched as as markets previously closed to them (Hog and soybean for example) were suddenly opened which no doubt made US farmers happy because the Chinese kept Canadian producers out of China. Is this the sort of deal that Trump makes? Our Prime Minister is a jackass but it seems that in the last round trade negotiations the US got everything it wanted. Frankly If I were the Judge in Vancouver I’d let the Huwai executive go with our apologies. The date for her trial is now set for January 20th, 2020.
