ORLANDO, FL – Between his campaign against President Gerald Ford in 1975-76 and his race against Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan delivered more than 1,000 radio broadcasts, including one in which he shared a story about Christmas in the Ukraine before and after communism.
In an effort to resist Christians, communist leaders secularized a favorite Ukrainian Christmas carol, “Nova Radist Stala” (Joyous News Has Come to Us). The original song began with these words: “The joyous news has come which never was before. Over a cave above a manger a bright star has lit the world, where Jesus was born from a virgin maiden…” Communists feared the public outcry that would follow a complete ban on Christmas, so they began to slowly secularize the holiday. The first rewrite of the song began: “The joyous news has come which never was before, a red star with five tails has brightly lit the world.” The second rewrite went further: “The joyous news has come which never was before. Long-awaited star of freedom lit the skies in October [the month of the Revolution]. Where formerly lived the kings and had the roots their nobles, there today with simple folks, Lenin’s glory hovers.”
Communism folded all Christmas celebrations into a New Year’s celebration
The former Soviet Union eventually began banning Christmas commemorations. St. Nicholas was replaced with “Did Moroz,” or Grandfather Frost. This Stalinist creation wears a red cap and long white beard of Santa Claus, but he delivers gifts to children on New Year’s Eve. Christmas trees were also banned, but people continued to trim their New Year’s trees. Communism folded all Christmas celebrations into a New Year’s celebration. read more
This sort of thing can’t happen here.
BTW, off topic, anyone notice a distinct lack of Salvation Army bell ringers this year in your area?
They seem to be nonexistent in mine this year.
@Anon: “This sort of thing can’t happen here.”
I don’t know what rock you’re living under, but it’s happening all over inside the USA and has been for quite some time.
How about all the lawsuits keeping any Christmas decoration off of public property? How about all the lawsuits removing the 10 commandments from public buildings and spaces? How about the ‘speech codes’ prohibiting “Merry Christmas” and replacing it with “Happy Holidays”? Many more examples I could give.
Wake up and smell the coffee! Tyranny is alive and well in the USA.
@Mark VII Ltd I am pretty sure @Anonymous was being sarcastic. And I have seen a few bell ringers in my area, so all is not lost… yet.
Today in a grade school in California, a children’s choir sang “We wish you a happy holiday” instead of “We wish you a merry Christmas.”

I heard one in the distance after coming out of a dr appointment two hours ago, made me feel good.
@The-Mamomma – probably sarcastic, BUT to defend Mark VII Ltd, you never know with an Anon…
@Anon – perhaps you should BUY your own?!
Anon. There was a singing SA’er at the local Bass Pro Shop-only charity I stuff cash in the bucket.
The evil satanic leftist Atheist cabal Freedom FROM Religion use typicsl Soviet AgitProp tactics. Their groups very name itself deliberately twists and mutilates the well known 1st Amendment phrase Freedom OF Religion into something entirely different. They are truly despicable
Very useful information I will post the post and come back to find out your information. Thanks for the dark post that will definitely come back.
Recently I asked an online acquaintance, Vladimir B., who lives in Russia somewhere north of the arctic circle, who I know through an online forum, about how Lyudmila Pavlichenko [Людмила Павличенко] is remembered today. She was a sniper during WW2, officially credited with killing 309 fascists, unofficial estimates are around 500.
She came to America, in I think 1942, as part of an effort to lobby FDR to open a western front, and became befriended by Eleanor Roosevelt. The American press nicknamed her Lady Death. The question was is she remembered there as Sgt. York or Audie Murphy are remembered here.
Anyway, V.B. pointed me to several Russian made war films with English subtitles. Many of them are very good movies. Such as “The Dawns Here are Quiet” [фильм “а зори здесь тихие” на английском языке.]

Or White Tiger, or The Great Patriotic War among others. Several are on on the StarMediaEN youtube channel.
One thing that stood out was somewhere in the films, a scene would show some group make an inquiry from a military leader, if he was a party member, and then demand a meeting to condemn another member of not toeing the party line. It seemed very strange way to live, ie. total BS.
Till I thought, hey wait a minute! The same kind of nonsense is going on in America today. Driven by the leftist, the antifa type groups, college faculty & students, and others. Censorship by culture bullying, more than by the state.
@Anon: “This sort of thing can’t happen here.”
You were wrong.
Me, too.
I remember in the 1960s sitting in church and hearing our pastor saying that America was threatened. That in the future, men would be marrying men, and women, women. That Christians would be persecuted. That we would not be able to pray in public or in schools. That freedom of speech would not be tolerated and we could go to jail for saying the wrong thing.
I remember thinking at that time, “Oh, that can’t happen here.”
