Utah senate unanimously moves to decriminalize polygamy

The Guardian-

The Utah state senate voted unanimously on Tuesday to effectively decriminalize polygamy among consenting adults, reducing penalties for a practice with deep religious roots in the predominantly Mormon state.

The bill, which would treat the offense of plural marriage as a simple infraction on par with a parking ticket, now moves to the Utah house of representatives, where it is likely to face greater resistance.

The bill swiftly cleared the Republican-controlled senate on a vote of 29-0 with little discussion.

Under current law, polygamy – typically involving a man who cohabits with and purports to marry more than one wife – is classified as a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

If the senate bill becomes law, punishments for plural marriage would be limited to fines of up to $750 and community service.

However, fraudulent bigamy – in which an individual obtains licenses to marry more than one spouse without their knowledge, or seeks to wed someone underage without her consent – remains a felony.

  1. …these are REPUBLICANS promoting sexual deviance.

Mitt Romney did not happen in a vacuum.

So, next up, take off the age limits, then the species limits, then harems, then religuous rape of infidels, THEN we can fully accommodate Islam.

    This merely paves the way.

But don’t ACTUALLY change the LAWS, that’s too hard and raises too many questions…

    Just IGNORE them.

    Selectively.

Soetoro was an evil bastard, but give the devil his due…he DID show them the way. Pick and choose, “Decriminalize”, “Prosecutorial Discretion” enough, and the law becomes your plaything, your weapon, your tool to rule as you see fit, no “consent of the govened” required.

The Mormans think it will stop with what THEY want.

But once you throw over Rule of Law and delegitimize your own system, you create a vacuum.

    And nature abhors a vacuum.

…into the void will Shari’a creep.

    …and it won’t tolerate Mormons, either…

  2. …so what’s the legal theory for division of assets when wife #2 seeks divorce? If she gets half as under most CURRENT law, the “early out” will be the best rewarded, just sayin’…

  3. …a woman I worked with walked past me with an extremely disgusted look on her face once, soon after we first started hiring Africans, and I asked her why. She responded by telling me that one of the Africans had just proposed marriage although they had no prior relationship whatsoever, as more of a business arrangement than anything else. He said he wanted her for citizenship, yes, but also to round out his “collection”.

…it seemed that, back in the old country, he already had 3 other wives, which he selected for specific criteria. He had, he said, a Chinese woman, a Black woman, and a Spanish woman already, and she would be his White woman. Once they married, he’d use his newfound citizenship to bring his OTHER wives over, THEN what a time they’d have…

…I’m not sure if he ever got his White wife, but he didn’t get THAT one. It seems, however, that he WOULD be able to import his OTHER wives AS wives because the Govenment didn’t want to interfere with “cultural practices of foreign born citizens” or some such, so polygamous marriage isn’t a PROPOSAL…

    It’s already HERE.

They just don’t TALK about it.

…Mittens’ Mob just wants to normalize it into the White community. I guess because there isn’t enough Mormon inbreeding already, and besides, all the COOL kids are doing it…

…we let them redefine legal marriage to include homosexuals, while many were saying that, once you open up the definition of “Marriage”, it will change into a LOT of WORSE things that destroy the foundational family unit. They laughed that it could happen.

    …well, here we are again…

…next up, pedophilia. After all, if were gonna start allowing redefinition of marriage and decriminalizing things based on it being “a practice with deep religious roots”, well, there’s these OTHER guys, and their “Perfect Man” sez…

  4. Getting rid of polygamy was a prerequisite for Utah Territory to join the Union.

Some feminist should sue to decriminalize polyandry (1 wife, many husbands). Mormons get apoplectic if you suggest polygamy and polyandry are the same thing.

  5. Both Paul and John prophetically warned us about accepting new gospels from spirits allegedly from heaven. Even the “angel’s” name is a joke; Moroni? Moron, I? Mormonism is NOT Christian.

(Don’t apply this logic to Islam, unless you want to be a martyr)

  6. Polygamy means a shortage of available women, and a surplus of unmarried men. If you though boys who grow up without fathers are bad, wait till you see hordes of young men without hope of finding women. Where do you think Islam gets is jihadis and suicide bombers? Utah crime will skyrocket.

“SNS… and jointly filed taxes. And employer-provided health care.’

Good point. And, which wife gets medical power of attorney over him as next of kin if he doesn’t explicitly nominate one? So many questions…

…oh, and the estate fight if he dies and ALL the wives have kuds by him will be EPIC…

  8. Billy Fuster – about the only reasonable comment here. Those who practice polygamy do so no matter what the law is. There have been very few arrests since the 1950’s. I currently employ 2 young men who grew up in polygamous families. They are great guys, who work hard and bother no one (and also have no desire to follow in the lifestyle of their parents).

When Utah became a state, the US senate refused to seat the first senator that the state legislature sent to Washington. His name was Reed Smoot. Some senators opposed seating him because they said even though he wasn’t a polygamist himself, he believed in polygamy. At one hearing, Boies Penrose, the Republican senate leader made a speech in behalf of Smoot saying “I don’t see why we can’t get along just as well with a polygamist who doesn’t polyg as we do with a bunch of monogamists who don’t monog!”

  9. Polygamy is OK — Here comes the Muslims !!
Muslims and Mormons — what could go wrong?? The Mormons better grow a pair…

Note to self — do NOT ever move to UTAH!

  10. “The bill, which would treat the offense of plural marriage as a simple infraction on par with a parking ticket,”… Makes sense. After all, this is about where you park your pecker.

    > If you though boys who grow up without fathers are bad, wait till you see hordes of young men without hope of finding women.

Unless you glossed over the part where all these Fundamentalist Mormons are riding Musk’s rockets to Mars, and being granted leave of Earth citizenship, you have no physical ability to comprehend what “hope” means.

  12. I don’t know, if two AIDS-spreading homos can get married, why have hetero behavior a felony?

And besides, Mormonism is a CULT, and their behavior has its own punishments.

  13. What sort of a woman gets herself involved with polygamy in the first place?
Have some self respect! I don’t care if the guy was the most gorgeous creature alive- if he doesn’t want to be EXCLUSIVE with me then I’m out.
    Monogamy or nothing.

  14. If Petey B doesn’t win the presidential race, he’s gonna carpetbag Utah right after he teabags yours truly so he can run for Senate. But his real motive is to marry as many rump rangers as possible because for Petey B, the more bleached elastic starfishes the better!

  15. Utah resident here, conservative, and (like most Utahans) a very big disliker of Romney.

For all of you who think this is about “Mormons” wanting wives for some f’d up sexual deviance, you need to stop. There are whole communities of polygamists in southern Utah, who are not “Mormon”, and there are a number of people, men and women, who try to escape it. However, they can face strict penalties even trying to escape polygamy given current State and Federal law. The bill being proposed is from a woman who escaped a polygamist community. It would encourage more people to ESCAPE this lifestyle, not join it.

Utah has their shit together, guys. You know… beside the whole Mitt thing. This isn’t about “Mormons”; any “Mormon” who practices polygamy is promptly excommunicated. Don’t be like a democrat and fling accusations without proper and factual context.

  16. Polyandry would work well for
a guy who doesn’t like being nagged all the time by his wife.

He’d automatically be 50% happier and have 50% more money to piss away on hunting, fishing and booze! Yay!
