Two generic drugs being tested in U.S. in race to find coronavirus treatments

(Reuters) – U.S. researchers, following the lead of scientists in other countries, have launched studies to see whether widely-available, low-cost generic drugs can be used to help treat the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

There are currently no vaccines or treatments for the highly-contagious COVID-19 respiratory illness, so patients can only receive supportive care for now.

But a 1,500-person trial, led by the University of Minnesota, began this week to see whether malaria treatment hydroxychloroquine can prevent or reduce the severity of COVID-19. Two other trials are studying the blood pressure drug losartan as a possible treatment for the disease.

The malaria drug, also being tested in China, Australia and France, was touted earlier this week by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk, who recovered from malaria in 2000 after taking the medication.

Besides having a direct antiviral effect, hydroxychloroquine suppresses the production and release of proteins involved in the inflammatory complications of several viral diseases. read more

  1. Treatment with drugs, no matter how effective, is of no use to the PTB since it only addresses the sick.

    A vaccine to prevent it is what they need, one that will be useful to them since it can be used to, say, require everyone to be vaccinated and prove the vaccination to enter public spaces or conduct interpersonal transactions of any kind for any reason.

    Something that could be made convenient by getting some kind of personal number marking at the time of vaccination, and something that everyone would then be willing to accept since it’s so easy to do.

  5. So the malaria countries that treat its citizens with chloroquine…..

    are having a mild outbreak of Chinese Coronavirus……

    Isn’t that as good as any vaccine….?

    BTW…..it’s already gone thru clinical trials and is generic and safe…..

    But Big Pharma (FDA) will hold it up because there’s no BIG MONEY in it right now…..

    FDA needs a new drug…..to make big money.

  6. Interesting that Losartan is being tried.
    Losartan and all generic forms were taken off the market after the manufacturing equipment in China was found contaminated with a dangerous cleaning chemical. One can only hope that the contaminated stockpiles are not being used. Losartan is a blood pressure medicine.

    this will shorten the effect on the economy

    once the sick are all cured then it’s over if we protect against reinfection, right?

  12. No, in this case, it generally doesn’t kill people, unlike Boomer Remover. 🙂

    But if a Boomer (me) ends up having to take it, it’s best to be informed. True of all medicines.
