Because no mask is good enough (as in “just as good”) for the vast majority of the United States. But it’s not The United States’ way to tell people buying the useless, “no”. Nor to take the money of the most appropriate, rather than the highest offering, buyer. China wiped out (for shipping back to China) a few cities’ commercial supplies, before those cities were hit with the virus. Letting “Boomers spending their great-granchildrens’ inheritance” (or just people with “vacation homes”), bid against people who are exposed hour after hour, day after day, won’t leave any for anyone who uses them. (Just like all hoarders.) So telling them “Just use a scarf, you’ll be fine” is not a bad strategy.

Virus: 20 to 30 nm.
Most viruses are smaller than the voids in rubber or nitrile gloves – it’s the randomness of the locations of the voids that protect – but pure dumb luck that one glove has or hasn’t any alignment of voids.
