The largest difference is that the totalitarians want their way ALL the time, not just on those rare occasions when their interests align with the People’s or the Constitution.
“Majority” rule (mob rule) sounds fine till you actually look at the practical implications.
Simply put, the Electoral College, the Supremes, and our formulation of the Republic are (were) mediating institutions – and Totalitarians must needs destroy ALL mediating institutions that stand between the Masters and the Slaves. There can be NO mediating institutions. Rule is predicated on Terror and Propaganda (Lies) – not by convincing “the people” of better ideas.

The dumpocrap mascot was portrayed by a 19th Century cartoonist (Nash?) who always drew them as donkeys because they were always kicking up a fuss, in contrast to the elephant’s strong and steady demeanor.
