United Airlines Putting Quotas Above Competence in the Cockpit

If the best pilots are black and female, so be it. But I don’t want woke behind the yoke. Now you’re endangering me because you feel the need to virtue signal, and condemn your whiteness.

United Airlines said on Tuesday it wants women and people of color to make up at least half of the 5,000 pilots it plans to train this decade at its new flight school, a push to diversify a career traditionally dominated by white men.

The announcement comes as U.S. airlines resume pilot hiring halted last year during the pandemic and as they find themselves in the crosshairs of politically charged issues involving race.

  1. Affirmative action hires can be funny when they’re not dangerous. At my last job, the quality manager had been a hairdresser and the head of maintenance was formerly a wedding planner—but both were minority females so they checked the right boxes. They didn’t know jack about the work they were supervising but at least they weren’t in a position to kill anyone (at least not directly).

  2. “We want to make sure that we are tapping into a big deep talent pool and not limiting ourselves to just one section of the pond,”

Shouldn’t you have to have “talent” before you are let into the “pool”?

  3. “This is yo pilot talkin’… Fasten yo damn seat belt or Ize gonna put this crate on autopilot and come twerkin’ down the aisle to buckle you upside yo head.”

  4. They’re just going to train some puppets just to act like they ‘did something’. If they’re picking people off the street, they’ll be gone in a week anyway.

I flew with women pilots or co-pilots several times, so women aren’t the problem. Purposely putting them out front if they’re no-talents and the right color, well that is a problem.

“If those new pilots are anything like my kids’ bus drivers, do your family a favor and beef up your Flight Insurance.”

…but don’t forget the old saying, “Takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory”. A plane comes down eventually whether you want it to or not, and sometimes it comes down on people and things that aren’t involved in the flight or with the airport in any way. A plane can crash pretty much anywhere, and every pilot can get the plane all the way to the crash site.

But most folks aren’t expecting it to be in their living room, or in their car.

There was a Northwest Airlines plane flight 255 that took off from Detroit once, and the pilots were so concerned about getting ahead of the weather where they were going that they forgot to configure the plane properly to leave.

The plane came down on a nearby highway so forcefully that passengers from the plane knocked the drivers out of cars on the highway, which they needed forensic autopsies to figure out.

Or the American Airlines plane flight 587 that took off over NYC, and the pilot, who had issues with overcorrecting in simulation, worked his rudder so hard in both directions that he ripped the tail off the plane and spun into a Queens neighborhood, destroying houses and killing numerous people on the ground.

That’s just 2, both egregious pilot error.

And that was BEFORE they worried about their skin color or sex organs.

…so you don’t have to be on a plane to die in a plane crash.

…and the ONLY flight insurance you can get for THAT would be getting prayed up at your local church, as I’m sure that this development would make any OTHER ground insurance in anticipation racist…

  6. They can wreck their own planes, and business, in the process and who should care.

The PROBLEM is that their potentially murderous experiment involves ALL OF US that they are permitted to fly over !

  7. If you were an illegal alien, I mean from another planet, and dropped into a hotel room, anywhere in the U.S. and forced to watch nothing but TV commercials, you would be under the impression that there are very few white people in the U.S. The one that are here are stupid and need directions from a person of color. Gay marriage is the norm. The few white women the live here are married to black guys. I really don’t care about any of these issues but I resent the fuck out of being Socially Engineered.
Oh yea, remember to always wash your hands, wear your mask, and wash your butt. I made that last part up only because it always sounds like the next thing they’re going to say.

  8. This could work…
The modern cockpit requires a crew of a pilot and a dog. The pilot needs to be there to feed the dog, and the dog’s job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch anything.

…that’s the Airbus philosophy and its caused many crashes itself because the auto systems are only as good as the inputs and the guy who programmed it.

Aircraft have been lost because the cleanup crews didn’t take the tape off the pitot tube and the plane doesn’t know how fast its going.

Aircraft have been lost because the flight control surfaces weren’t connected correctly and the auto system doesn’t know how to deal with it.

There’s a real famous scene where Airbus is showing their plane off at an airshow, Air France 296, and it serenely plows into a forest at the end of the runway, killing most folks on board, because the plane was convinced they were landing and would not accept commands from the pilot to go around.

…also, remember that autosystem programming is a one-man birthday party. You don’t get any presents you don’t bring. I automate factory machinery, and I can tell you that none of those computers does a damn thing until I TELL them what to do, so it’s MY responsibility to make everything work together and in the right order when the green button is pressed, so thats not ROBOT brains you’re seeing in action, but a robot RESPOMDING to inputs and outputs with MY brains telling it what its supposed to do with that information.

And I can’t think of everything everytime. People can ALWAYS find a way to gom it up that surprises me, and inputs and outputs fail ALL THE TIME.

Because they are all made in…CHINA.

…so, do you want to get in a 70,000 pound tube flown by a machine using Chinese inputs and controlled by a system using those inputs and outputs programmed by a guy who probably isn’t a pilot based on the instructions of others who may or may NOT have anticipated something that goes wrong on this fantastically complicated flying train wreck without having a trained pilot able to take over and know what to do in real time and the ACTUAL situation to give you at least a CHANCE to survive?

    …I work with automation.

    …MY answer is HELL no…

  10. United isn’t the only one.
The company my husband works for, Wood, came right out and told the employees they would be hiring for diversity first.
Then everyone got an email telling them the company is going to hire enough women to make the company have 40% women employees.
Nothing like openly admitting you’re going to violate EEO rules.

Qualifications? They don’t need no stinkin’ qualifications!

  11. You can be sure that when these planes piloted by POC crash, there is NO WAY in hell that the NTSB will blame “pilot error”. Investigators will be pressured to blame “mechanical fault”, if they want to keep their jobs.

  12. …it’s not unheard of for there to be fudged reports if there’s political reasons to do so, and many times final reports are disputed. The worst air disaster in history involving the collision of two 747’s in Tenerife was most apparently caused by an impatient KLM pilot who didn’t get proper clearance from an ATC who was trying to run airport operations in an airport that wasn’t supposed to handle traffic like this, and so he started his takeoff roll before another plane had cleared the runway. All of his passengers died, as did a goodly number of passengers on the other plane.

But because he was the most revered, most senior training pilot on KLM’s rolls, and something of a celebrity at home, KLM and the Netherlands disputes his culpability to this day.

    …everyone has a sacred cow, I suppose.

…it’s just that United is suggesting that we ensure that MOST of the cockpit crew is sacred cows ON PURPOSE…

  13. Another data point on Why I Will Not Fly Anywhere on Any Airline.

  14. One of my closest friends is a commercial pilot. The airline he worked for folded after 20 years. In order to get on with another major airline he had to attend a gay pilots convention in order to get a face-to-face meeting. The guy doing the initial interview told him he was exactly the kind of person they were looking for, and to take off his wedding ring and not mention his wife when he went through the final interview process. The airline was so intent on hiring people with, shall we say “lots of joystick experience”, that they had an interview team at the convention. Short answer is that he was hired that same afternoon. Later, some of the folks involved privately told him that they were glad he did things that way so the pilot-types could bypass the HR Weenies and hire someone they knew would be a good pilot while telling HR “We didn’t know, we couldn’t ask questions about that stuff because you told us not to”.

  15. Training is RACIST!

Hold a female/transgender/negro/mexican/indian … well … NON-WHITE MALE lottery and, for the winners, just declare them pilots and put em in the cockpit!

Come to think of it, that’s how they should hire their mechanics, stewardesses (flight attendants), ground crews, lawyers, CEOs, CFOs, &c.

    It’s only FAIR!

  16. There are absolutely top notch Military Academy Graduate pilots, some black, some female, who are already flying for the airlines. United Airlines just announced that as far as United Airlines is concerned, skills, discipline, aptitude, and professionalism don’t matter. Race and gender are top priorities. Thanks United. Oh, and eff you. I’ll NEVER set foot on United again. Racist bastards. Hope you go bankrupt again, like you do every couple years.
