Soaring demand for chicken has resulted in wing shortages across America, according to the country’s third-largest poultry producer. 

The Laurel, Mississippi-based Sanderson Farms Inc. said it does not have enough supply to keep up with demand despite recently picking up 40 million pounds per year. 

“We cannot supply enough wings to anybody, at retail or at foodservice,” Joe Sanderson, CEO of Sanderson Farms, said at the Goldman Sachs Global Staples Forum on Tuesday. Sanderson said his company each week ends up short 15 loads of wings for both retail and food service. 

The company plans to “allocate” wings to make sure “everybody gets some,” he said, noting that the combination of strong demand and limited supplies will cause prices to climb even higher from current levels.

Wing prices have already risen to $3.16 per pound for customers picking Sanderson’s dock, mimicking strong gains that have occurred in other chicken products. Boneless chicken breast prices have climbed 236% since the fall to $2.25 per pound while tenders have spiked 77% to $2.43.  read more

  1. I always wondered when this would happen. Considering all the major chain wing joints, restaurants, mom and pop diners selling these damn things, you would think scientists would have come up with a mutant, four or six wing chicken to use in the food industry.

  11. I wonder if this is why we started seeing “boneless wings” a few years ago. The Chicken Lords are getting us used to ersatz wings made the same way McDonald’s likely makes McNuggets from chicken processing plant floor sweepings.

  12. I agree with Jethro, I stopped ordering wings many years ago…less cluck for the buck, I never get full on them and have to rely on sides to fill me up.

    That’s another thing, why is coleslaw served in such chintzy cups?? Love the stuff, but can’t stand how little they put into the cup/bowl. Didn’t know cabbage was on the endangered list.

  19. I haven’t seen any chicken shortages here. Price of beef is outrageous. I think the chicken wing is the bet part of the chicken, most flavorful part of the chicken. If you’re into NY penicillin, chicken feet make the best broth – whatever ails you it will cure.

There was a time when my grandparents were young back in the early 20th Century that Canada geese could found at any farmers market all cleaned and gutted hanging from hooks for sale to customers who wanted fresh meat and poultry. The reason chicken feet makes great broth is all that collagen breaks down into a nice smooth, velvety broth which is great for making chicken soup. And Canada goose shit is worse than stepping on dog shit because it’s all slippery and gross.

  28. Went by the restaurant called McDonalds today. Normally you can go through drive through, or go in and sit down. Only drive through was open. They can’t hire sufficient staff to open the dining rooms. Nobody wants to work when they get free money from the government.

    I’ve had it with this shit. These fuckers are even too lazy to steal, it is easier to vote for Democrats and establishment Republicans to do your stealing for you.

  30. JDHasty – I’m in the process of moving, so looking for a job in my field in the new area. You should see all of the companies, especially the fast food joints, giving sign on bonuses just to work there. They are practically begging people to work for them. Sad how that last two generations have become so lazy and useless.
