Bacon May Disappear in California as Pig Rules Take Effect

Breitbart – Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic.

That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items — bacon — hard to get in California.

“Our number one seller is bacon, eggs and hash browns,” said Kim, who for 15 years has run SAMS American Eatery on the city’s busy Market Street. “It could be devastating for us.”

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

Animal welfare organizations for years have been pushing for more humane treatment of farm animals but the California rules could be a rare case of consumers clearly paying a price for their beliefs.

With little time left to build new facilities, inseminate sows and process the offspring by January, it’s hard to see how the pork industry can adequately supply California, which consumes roughly 15% of all pork produced in the country.

  1. It’s commiefornia. Tough beans for them…they voted for it.
“At least initially, analysts predict that even as California pork prices soar, customers elsewhere in the country will see little difference.”

  2. So read all that and ten ask yourself this questions. Who owns 68% of the Hog market now? (and growing). The fucking Chicoms who can’t butcher enough pig to feed it’s citizens. Do you think they care about California diners? Sadly 70% of the retarded California electorate didn’t realize this before the voted to give the pig a hug before you killed it. The stupidity is monumental. I can’t live with out BACON.

  3. Maybe use the space restrictions to kick out china owned Smithfield if they are in Cali. They taste like crap, or rather lack of taste. You’re better off eating air. We cooked up some ribs years ago from Smithfield and after smoking them and seasoning them and slathering with BBQ sauce somehow they ended up tasting like nothing, literally, the weirdest thing. A few months ago the wife came home with a slab from Smithfield again cause that’s all that was in the store and we were set on having ribs. And the same exact thing years later, totally tasteless ribs. Horrible, nothing changed. Next time she comes home with Smithfield I’m throwing it right in the trash.

    * I couldn’t help myself to use this opportunity to rag on Smithfield. lol. If your pork doesn’t taste right, check the name for Smithfield.

  5. Californians voted themselves this nonsense, let them enjoy it. Meanwhile, buy more bacon, and enjoy. Bacon for breakfast, bacon with your lunch sandwich, bacon topped cheeseburgers on the grill, meatloaf with chopped bacon and covered with bacon, bacon wrapped shrimp, BACON! And pork tenderloin, marinated with bourbon, spareribs smoked low and slow, and …

Californians want bacon? Let them eat tofu.

You do realize Smithfield is owned by the ChiComs. The wife bought some about three months ago. I threw it in the trash. Strangest consistency of meat I’ve ever seen. It was like greasy jello bacon.

  7. We’re gonna have to start another Special Operations Executive to disrupt chicom manufactories and smuggle good clean bacon from the US into Communist Occupied Territories such as The People’s Republic of California…

  8. Crossing into California now will be- do you have any fruit or bacon in the car?
On the bright side maybe this will help with the wild hog problem? I remember them having tasty ribs.

  9. California is a prime source for such stupidity in the country, but note that roughly half the peeps elsewhere buy into their stupidity.
Demonstrating once again that either we must split into two very different new half countries, or there will necessarily be a war that will tamp down the stoopids who feel they must ruin every aspect of a sane & enjoyable life for the rest of us.

“God given Right to Life , Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness….” remember?

  10. The rules will not make pork and chicken go away it will make them much more expensive. The people who voted for that deserve the higher costs they voted for.

  11. I seem to remember a few years back that Minnesota tried to impose their regulations for power generation on North Dakota coal fired plants. I’m pretty sure the court ruled against Minnesota. Externialities was what it was called.
