His name is Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, but the Greek composer is better known as Vangelis. And if the latter still isn’t familiar, his most famous work surely will be: Vangelis composed the soundtrack for the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. The composer—also celebrated for his Blade Runner soundtrack, has died at age 79, reports the BBC. Vangelis died in the hospital, though no cause of death was immediately specified. He “changed an entire era of music,” tweets US composer Austin Wintory. Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire theme rose to No. 1 on the US charts, and the Guardian notes that its “music became synonymous with slow-motion sporting montages.”

Some of Vangelis best work was before he was famous, as a member of Aphrodite’s Child, who’s music is interesting to say the least.
Love Vangelis – have a lot of his albums, and a lot of his collaborations with Jon Anderson of Yes. Tried Aphrodite’s Child but didn’t get much traction.
Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire are definitely favorites.
Reminds me of Yanni, the ultra Maga Greek dude who played in the same bar I played in hundreds of times in Minnesota.

Sturge: me too. I recall buying that album and being so thrilled that the two songs I loved most (Vangelis’) were on the album. Also exposed me to alot of classical masters like Vivaldi

I just put on the Chariots of fire tune and ran in slow motion to the booze cabinet and mixed a drink. A bourbon for Vangelis. And a scotch for Vangelis. And one beer for Vangelis.
I love the “Chariots of Fire” music. And the movie. And the actual people and stories upon which it was based.
One of my favorites. God rest his soul. Chariots of fire sound track was great but sitting through the movie in the theater was almost as bad as I can imagine sitting through Ishtar was.

His score is one of the reasons,Blade Runner,is such an amazing movie. It’s fits so perfect with the movie that the two are inseparable.
