We have been BOMBARDED with spam that is trying to have us shut down by deranking us. People think that these comments about making money are to make you click and go to some destination site. NO. It’s not only about that. This is an effort to shit on your site, and we are doing our best to combat it.

The sentiment that we are removing comments makes us feel like just letting them win. It is a constant battle, a full-time job, and we hand-moderate as much as possible and experiment with filters that are largely friggin’ worthless in combating the problem. What it sometimes does is flag innocent comments.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t simultaneously complain about the comments that get through about “making x amount of dollars a day,” and then complain when we are trying our best to shovel the shit against the tide.

I have requested that you IGNORE THOSE COMMENTS. They will be dealt with. But when people constantly make references to them and make us react quickly to them to keep the experience here as good as we can make it (and not demand you register in order to comment) we feel we have to try everything under the sun. This leads to having your comments screwed with. Frankly, if I could put a bullet in the head of the person or persons responsible for these spam comments I would do it without hesitancy and spend the rest of my life in jail. I am at my wits end and this shit should be a higher priority for law enforcement. But they do not care.

There is no conspiracy against your comments, and to think you think that is not only frustrating us but disappointing us as well.

We post “anti-commie” material all day, but you caught us. It’s all a ruse to delete your comment.

I apologize for sounding strident in this post, but I do not think you realize the amount of work involved, the stress involved and how big of a problem this is.

Many sites have removed their comment sections because it is too stressful to deal with. We are doing our best.

  1. I often think we are targeted hard because we have one of the last comment sections where you can comment w/o registration. I think that is hated by people who are anti-freedom.

  2. It takes less than 1 second to scroll past those spam comments. They’re on every site online.
    We’ve gotten so used to everything having to be instant.
    Remember when we first had the internet?
    AOL anyone?
    All the tones while it took a good 5 minutes to log on.
    Downloads were so slow you could initiate one and go have lunch while it finished.

    Calm down.
    Take some cbd oil or something.
    It takes no effort to ignore the spam.

  8. A lot of commenters get moderated for months at a time for no apparent reason. Perhaps a different blogging engine and/or plugins are indicated? I’m currently unable to comment – but I just thought I’d try in case someone reads the bit bucket of captured junk.

  9. I am going to write a post soon about the change we are being forced to make. Soon your ability to comment will be predicated on the fact that you have had a previous comment approved by us, thus whitelisting your IP forever.

  15. BFH, thank you for all that you do. Being able to come here during the Obama years helped me maintain my sanity. I really mean that. Complainers are going to complain; its what they do. As for me, I’m grateful that you are still fighting the good fight and doing it with such flair.

    I have been blocked all day and every single comment deleted.

    It’s hard not to believe this to be Alphabet censoring.

    I would be willing to take the robot test, but it’s hard not to get frustrated when your comments are being “moderated” ,

    I’m sure Billy was assuming Alphabet interference, I was.

    We are all on Adolph Pedos McChildGropers DOJ enemies list so censorship of our 1A rights is a heartbeat away…

  19. I just ignore the spam and Alphabet “liberals” but we are all being actively monitored by the FBI, DHS, and NSA.

    This site is precious to us grizzled vets, it helps my sanity and PTSD daily and I love all of you for it.

  31. @BFH — I really like the idea of a white list to combat the C.H.U.D. spammers. I can see using the IP address might cause you more work than needed to manage the list. I imagine my IP when posting from home will stay fairly constant, but I also post from my sister’s house several times a week using my Chromebook, and when I’m out and about and using my phone. Those would show up with different IP addresses.

    How about requiring both a name and an email address to post comments, and then using the combination of name and email for the white list? It sure seems like it would be easier to manage.

    Just a thought. There’s probably something wrong with it.

  33. Knowing absolutely nothing about the admin side of blogs, I need help with something. Why the hesitancy about making people register first before being allowed to comment?

    On the “intrusive” scale, it barely moves the needle; a username and an email address, that’s it, right?

    I don’t like the “comment waiting moderation” for 2 reasons, it causes the admin folks extra work and it negates any timeliness comments, putting it on the back burner for a few hours.

    Nobody expects the admin folks here to do more or be burdened needlessly but if there is a small fix, like registering first, that could be applied with little disruption to the process, it’s worth a try.

    If Fur does bullet in the left ear a spammer, I volunteer for jury duty.

  34. Question. Is the spammer coming to the site and posting a comment like the rest of us do? Because what I hear is most of them get in through a SQL injection and write that shit straight to your database making your frontend filters worthless. Since it’s typically the same comment over and over, maybe it’s easier to have a filter that removes comments based on pattern like “80 US dollars” in the comment would get zapped automagically. Call that filter every 5 minutes and the spam would vanish every 5 minutes. Dunno, but good luck.

  37. In all the years I’ve been reading this….(do they still call em blogs?) It is my highly considered & qualified opinion; that the regulars here are smartified enough not to click spam linkages.
    Aside from the horrible grammar in those things, which I find funny, why would any legit person post all their secrets to their huge income for all us lowly ultra maga, boomer fascist, homophobes to cash in on anyway?

  39. I know I had asked last time you moderated why my comment was being moderated. That was not intended as a complaint, just asking why to be sure I wasn’t having a problem on my end. The the lovely Mrs. RadioMattM explained it to me. I, too, apologize if that was taken as a complaint.

    I generally use a VPN and that has caused my problems before when I used Chrome. No big deal to work around that.

    If there is anything I can do to help take the load off, just let me know.

    This is more irritating than a few $80/hr inserts now and then. Even though I would really love giving them a physical taste of how irritating this is.

    I guess publicizing their emails would only cause them to give phony, (or someone else’s) emails. But, it might help giving them a piece of your comment following every stupid $80/hr Sarah comment.

    But, folks, keep in mind. These are signs that IOTW is over the target areas and not just flying blind up in the sky. I knew I hit Pure American Gold when I accidentally bumped into IOTW-R a few years ago! Really awe-inspiring, way above-average comment site, with educated, talented, experienced and more mature-minded people than the usual rabble on the Internet.

  56. I love iotwreport and have been coming to this site for years. I don’t comment much anymore, but I like to scroll through and read them as so many of the commenters are now familiar to me. And I just scroll past crap I don’t want to read. I don’t expect BFH to do anything about stuff I can ignore. But keep up the good work! And God bless you for all you do.

I too thank the wonderful Lord for this site and the brilliant folks who read with me and share their responses. You all are in the same league as the CTH, Sundance, Menagerie and the treepers. But tbh I enjoy some of the more ribald stories and responses as I need a good laugh these days.
    The winds of Ian on Wednesday between 1 and 4 am really discombobulated me. No damage to house or property but plenty of wear on my 73 year old soul and mind. I have needed you all more than ever lately it seems. Thank you Fur. if I may I call you Fur. Tomorrow I go back to teaching Algebra to a bunch of shell-shocked 8th and 9th grade students at a Central Florida Christian academy, who probably had their faith sorely tested last week. I don’t plan to do bunch of math tomorrow – all our teachers are safe and only one 8th grade boy has been reported to have lost everything. We pray in Chapel every Wednesday and this one will be outdoors under the oaks. 85 degrees and sunny. We survived a big one.

    Both were quarantined, “Awaiting moderation”. Then “comments were closed”. Neither (ever? haven’t checked back, again) appeared.

  69. I have never seen my comments here removed. A rare thing to see these days. Some of the supposed conservative sites are learning from the leftists and remove comments, block legitimate ones for crime of disagreeing or agreeing.
    Thank you folks for this. I know dealing with spam and attacks on the site is not easy, and takes time and effort, but keeping up the legitimate comments is something I appreciate.

  74. I have complete confidence that BFH and the IOTWr staff know best how to maintain this website. Give BFH credit for the blood, sweat and tears he has dedicated to keeping the IOTWr site running.

    The financial strain must be intense. Guessing BFH probably wonders why he continues with the site. He’s not getting rich operating it. Maybe, it’s because he’s passionate about what he does – providing a very distinctive and vital, entertaining website that gives many of us with conservative views to vent, express and exchange ideas and keep current about crucial news.
    Speaking of exchanging ideas. those of you complaining need to offer solutions, don’t just whine.

    BTW, if you’ve been a reader of this site for a long time and you’re complaining…you know better. Get a grip. Ignore the trolls and spam – Please! They’re on every social website.
    Also, if your complaint is not constructive, why express it. It just causes strife and resentment.

    I enjoy and appreciate every moment I have access to IOTWr. In this Marxist political environment, all of us should be thankful we still have IOTWr as our sounding board. Don’t take this great website for granted.

  76. Spammers, scammers, fraudsters, etc all want the attention. Best to ignore them and if they really get on anyone’s nerves then contact federal agencies which oversee fraud and theft attempt and report the spam-frauds.
