I remember my brother saying to me a long, long time ago. “I went to the movies and took a shot on a movie. We had no idea what it was about. Movie is hilarious. The father is Dad.”

PHenry wants to know if there is anyone out there that hasn’t seen it.

    We used to go to a relative’s for all the holidays. Then one Christmas my kids asked if we could stay home instead and get Chinese food like A Christmas Story.
    We had a great time.

  2. C’mon Fur. Tell the whole story I originally sent

    Sometimes I amuse myself at the expense of others. I was in the checkout line at Tractor Supply and an 11 or 12 year old boy was with his dad in line next to me.

    The kid put a BB gun in the cart and a conversation ensued between man and son.

    I couldn’t help myself, but assumed everyone on the planet has seen A Christmas Story, which revolves around Ralphie wanting a Red Ryder BB gun. The line throughout the movie was “you’ll put your eye out kid.”

    I just had to say it out loud at the store. Apparently they had never seen the movie. Oh shit.

  7. When I sent out a question I was surprised that some haven’t seen it. Another said it’s a terrible movie. I don’t know. It’s Americana 1930s. I read the book back in the 1980s. I asked cranky friend who described it as the worst movie ever if he’d ever seen Kevin costner’s Waterworld?

  8. A friend of mine decorates his house in A Christmas Story memorabilia each holiday season – including the “leg lamp”. Then they play the movie non-stop all day long on Christmas day.

  18. We put it in the DVD player and let it play all night while we wrap gifts, anytime you come back in the room you know what is going to happen next.
    It is a great movie.
    We watch all of the old Christmas movies over the holiday season, there are so many good ones plus the music. This year they will have more meaning just because of where we are at as a country and what we are about to lose if things do not change.
    We can not let go of the past because it shapes the future.

I love Jean Shepherds’s humor, I first encountered him in an old issue of Mad Magazine from the late 50’s/early 60’s with an article called Night people vs. creeping meat ballism which satirically made fun of the rampant creep of consumerism in America in the 1950’s. I prefer The Great American 4th of July over a Christmas Story just because Ralphie and Flick and Schwartz were typical dumbass teenage boys and the Old Man loved his fireworks, KABOOM!

  21. Have always enjoyed the movie. Even have a couple of extremely faded t-shirts with “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out” on them that come out during December.

    Ralphie in bed and “Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty” sticks with me the most, reminding me of when I was a kid and would have my favorite toy or football lying next to me.

  22. I did talk to a young adult yesterday who hasn’t seen Blazing Saddles, didn’t know anything about it.
    Or Airplane. Or Better Off Dead. WTH is wrong with these people???

  24. I bought my folks their first DVD player for Christmas almost 25 years ago. I gave my Dad a copy of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and I gave my Mom a copy of “A Christmas Story” (two of their favorites). I love you, Mom and Dad, and I miss you both more than I can say.

  25. I haven’t seen it since I gave up sat-tv 15 years ago. TBS had exclusive rights to it.
    I always pull out “Larceny, Inc.” and John Ford’s “3 Godfathers” for Christmas each year.

  27. @Jethro, word is some of the cast members are thinking of buying it.

    We visited and spent the night some years ago. The only souvenir we bought was a leg lamp night light.
    I watch the movie for the scenes in Higbee’s. When I worked in Cleveland at the SOB it was a fun place to visit at lunch time for food or shopping. I loved that place with its chandeliers, wooden escalators and art deco accents especially in the Silver Grille. After it was sold and rebranded as Dillards it was never the same.

  28. I saw parts of it and just know about it by osmosis. Like the leg lamp, the kid getting his tongue stuck on metal pole, now soap in his mouth I guess. I did not care of watch it myself but then I’m not big on TV. We have not had any TV past four years, just for Thanksgiving we got a new antenna and now it’s Antenna TV filled with old stuff mostly and just a few network channels like old days. I may see Elizabeth Warren on Jimmy Kimmel on a commercial YUK but the network local news will be good and the football was good to see again. I liked It’s Wonderful Life before it became super famous but do not have to see it each yr.

  30. I grew up on WW2 and western movies and my parents didn’t seem to have any favorites, especially my Mom who never watched much TV until she couldn’t do anything else. I always liked the variety shows like Ed Sullivan, Hollywood Palace, Jackie Gleason. We used to get movies on Fri and Sat nights on one of our few channels and the oldest talking movies were shown after school each day. I always liked Andy Hardy who knows who played him
