CNBC: Airlines canceled hundreds of flights this week as winter storms, bitter cold and high winds snarled U.S. travel ahead of Christmas weekend.
Carriers scrubbed more than 5,000 U.S. flights from Wednesday through Friday, according to tracking site FlightAware. That period includes what airlines expected to be the busiest travel times before Christmas Day. More than 16,000 U.S. flights were delayed.
Chicago’s two main airports — O’Hare and Midway — and Denver International Airport had the biggest share of canceled flights on Thursday. New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Detroit and Chicago Midway were set to have the most disruptions on Friday.
Airlines warned that the snow, ice, high winds and cold temperatures could affect travel from Seattle to Boston to North Carolina.
Wednesday’s cancellations accounted for about 2% of U.S. airlines’ schedule, while about 30% of flights were delayed by an average of 47 minutes, FlightAware data showed. Disruptions worsened throughout Thursday. MORE
Better safe than sorry.
I wouldn’t fly if they paid me – but I understand others who fly.

It’s Trump’s fault.
Well, maybe DeSantis’s.
Think of all the avgas saved.
Just saying’
More gas available to bomb Roosians in Ukraine okay?
If you didn’t leave for wherever last week, you don’t need to go there. Warnings were out 2 weeks ago about this blizzard. I’m wondering how my friends who moved to TN, and MO (aka Misery) are doing? It’s better living there even if you’re freezing your ass off, right? I’m hgearing the complaints….
Storm is already starting in western NY; temp is dropping like a rock, wind is howling, wind chill is below zero and it’s starting to snow. Maybe I’ll go out and make snow angels later.
I will take s MO in a fucking heartbeat over this bullshit on the Olympic Peninsula. At least there a chance of some GD sunshine in the Ozarks.
I’m in South Central MO and the Sun is shining bright!
It’s up to 7F!
(better than -4F which it was last night)

Commercial flying is no longer viable in the Banana Republic of America.
Reading the Montana posts on FB is hysterical. This is the epic storm the locals have all been waiting for-the one that’ll drive the transplants back to their home states. -40’s, -50’s and -60’s! Yikes!!
Our snow is now covered in ice here in western WA. SeaTac was shut down for awhile, same with i90. Sure is pretty to look at. Rain begins again tonight…
I’m freezing my ass off in NorCal. It’s 58 degrees. It should reach 65.
Here on MI lake shore, it’s a balmy 5° with sustained winds and next to no visibility.
More of the same until Saturday evening.
To add insult to injury, we are getting even more in lake effect snow.
Even so, this still hasn’t equaled the mess of the storm from the 70s.
Someone posted on Twitter ‘It’s 25 degrees here, what’s the temp where you are?’
I replied ‘About the same. Oh, Celsius.’ 🙂
Flying cross-country on Sunday. But I think weather will be fine by then. And very little travel happening on Christmas Day.
I can’t walk on the Ohio River this year, so still not up to ’70s cold.
About 8 degrees f here with a win chill to about -15 f or so. Starting out to be an old fashioned Christmas just like I remember from the sixties.
Wind was so strong it was rattling the license plate on my Xb. Chillie!
But don’t worry the Ukrainians will be getting their vodka and the Big Guy gets 10%.
-14 in my small Indiana town last night! -45 wind chill. What should a man do in such dire conditions? Well, I built a huge fire in the fireplace, lit up a Partagas Black Label cigar, poured a glass of nice single malt Scotch & read “Blood Meridian” by Cormac McCarthy(Highly Recommend!)in my comfy pub chair with my feet up. Pretty good night all in all!
