Ever See a Thugs Hanging Outside a Guy’s Convenience Store or Gas Station and Ruining the Business?

You watch the clip and think, “what is wrong with that owner? If I were him I would never let that business fail because of those assholes.”

I receive emails of this type every day —>

“This is the exact reason why you don’t see activity from any of the old timers (their words not mine.)”

“Maybe it’s time to lay down some rules, like no personal attacks or you can be banned for a number of days.”

The question here shouldn’t be “what is wrong with the dumbass owner?”

The question is, “hmmm, in this scenario, am I the asshole?”

“Am I the guy who is making the store a shithole because good people don’t want to have to walk past my assholish behavior?”

The answer is, “yes.”

You are the asshole, not me.

The fighting between commenters ends today. I don’t have time to unravel your grievances about “who started it.” “Who said something first.”

If you want to say, “this site ain’t what it used to be,” so be it. If you’re as smart as you all think you are during your childish pissing wars, then you’d know that it’s not the site that is the problem.

Three, 4, or 5 people being banned won’t kill the site.

Three, 4 or 5 people acting like thugs (thinking it looks impressive to outsiders) will.

So, get smart or get gone.

I’ve had enough.

  2. Thank you, Fur. I still market the site on Twitter (the reason I started on Twitter to begin with), but I check the comments first. If there are these types of interchanges, I don’t bother Tweeting it even if it’s a good post. My thought is, if someone new checks us out and sees the childish behavior they will never come back.

    I will still check out the comments for now. When I see people (you know who you are) finally grow up and behave, I’ll be free to just Tweet the post and move on.

  3. What I truly do not get is that they are friends of the site. I’ve made them feel at home, that this is their home. But they are ruining the kitchen, messing up the bathrooms. The yard looks like shit.
    I don’t ask for anything.
    I asked for an end to this many, many times.
    If they read your comment, Claudia, maybe, just maybe, they will understand what it is they are doing.

  8. Never post a comment to anyone else that you wouldn’t say to them in person. I discovered years ago that some iOTW readers live within 15 miles of my house. I even had the pleasure of meeting one in person.

    If you’re going to fight for the preservation of a culture, make sure it’s a culture people will want to preserve: one of civility and respect.

  9. My own perspective, for what it’s worth.

    Saying ,”The arguing stops now” is ineffective and does not address the problem. This is a free speech site and as such, “spirited” debate should not be punished. But the situation has arisen where clearly definable rules, and penalties for not adhering to those rules, must be put in place.

    Sadly, the administrators are now placed in a position of being comment moderators which is not only demeaning to them but so unnecessary. And I sincerely believe that one well-placed email to one main offender here, saying,”Knock off the shit, no more name-calling, personal attacks, and especially no bringing up the wives of fellow commentators, or else”, this would have gone a long way in restoring civility.

  12. I would also add, this public chastisement resulted from the Solzhenitsyn thread from yesterday. Anyone can read it for themselves. What turned, from a very cordial discussion about censorship on the site, turned into a very ugly exchange, was driven by one guy who popped in and tried to pick a fight, even going so far as to mask his identity with an “Anonymous” tag. So no, I don’t think saying THEY are messing up the kitchen or THEY are tearing up the yard, is accurate.

  13. BFH, the positives here far outweigh the negatives, and I thank you sincerely for your efforts that make iOTW the stand-out place that it is.

    The use of the comments sections as cage fighting venues is certainly a negative. Because I’m generally not interested in whatever the issue being fought over is, I skip over those comments and that does become tiresome.

    I understand your position. If one of the first things a new visitor sees is a torrent of off-topic bile he will likely leave and will be unlikely to return. Therefore, even though I’m very much a free speech man I have no objection to what you’re doing…largely because I know that you’re a free speech man as well. It’s a sure thing that I can’t come up with a better solution.

    I sure don’t want your work to be thankless, so, again, THANK YOU.

  16. The only dweebs I ever put on blast are the Anonymous Alphabet trolls who try to inject their marxist crap just to get us all stirred up and committed to violence.

    I’m onto their game now so I’m rarely our for scalps because the infighting and ugly attitudes are just the kind of vitriol they are encouraging to delegtimise us.

    This site is heavily monitored by the deep state Alphabets as we have the pulse on the truth they so fear getting out.

    With Tucker free, Twitter more balanced and RFK Jr & PDJT shouting from the townsquare their narrative and control is waning.

    Us fighting amongst ourselves is exactly what they want.

    So as I used to tell my troops, let’s all drink a cup of shut the fuck up and get the mission done.

  19. Well stated, BFH. Quite a few years ago, I had to come to the same conclusion about a site I used to administer. We lost some long time members in the purging, but it was for the better.

  22. I’m pretty new here. Been here occasionally for years, but lately I’ve been using this site as my primary view into the f’d up reality we are experiencing these days.

    Not many sites have this much variety of Truth! Thank you BFH and All of the other content contributors!

    As far as the comment jousting – I do tend to read through all the comments. Maybe not so much as for enjoyment, but to try and figure out who is who – for no other reason than curiosity.

    I tend to comment and move on, so if anyone responds I tend to miss it.

    I also believe I have a thick skin and I tend to ignore pot shots. Sometimes I argue a bit on what I see as reality, but for the most part any of my arguments will likely fall on deaf eyes anyway.

    Regardless, I will continue to visit consistently and help this site however I can for as long as it exists.

    Thank all of you for an awesome informational and sensor-free (as close as possible anyway) environment!

    I miss seeing old time iOTWers on threads. Even I go into lurking mode sometimes myself. That’s not good and if it’s stressing me out imagine how BFH feels. I’m glad he posted this today.

  25. I’ve been out so not sure what all is going on, but I will say this about that.

    I had one commmenter hate me so much that his last post here was about how much he hated me, which he said he felt free to do because he was dying. Sure enough, shortly after that BFH posted a memorial for him as a long-time commentator. I have no idea why he hated me so much, but it was a fact, so other than occasionally snark one of his post or pray for him in reply, I mostly ignored him. Not feeding the trolls seems to be the best way to get them to lose interest. But still he literally hated me to the end, and it makes me sad that’s how he chose to end his days on Earth, despising someone he didn’t really know and never did or would have met, for something he read online and may well have misunderstood due to the lack of nuance or tone that the medium necessarily imparts.

    None of this will matter a hundred years from now. None of this matters to him now, either, of that I am sure.

    Life’s too short to spend it hating random strangers, or provoking random strangers to hate you.

    Don’t be like that.

    I’ve been wondering about the ‘cryptic commenter’ that has been posting here for a while; uses different names and posts some really oddball stuff. The writing style gives them away as the same person. At first I thought it might be someone who already posts here, but now I don’t know.

  28. Reason why it’s illegal in most places to drink alcohol on the premises-even if you bought it there. Instant asshole-just add alcohol used to be something you could try to head off.
    Unfortunately, bad personal behavior is more common without inebriants & doesn’t carry the stigma it once did, and still should.

  36. As a paying supporter of this wonderful place, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this warning. I am weary of cliques and thugs of any type, and do not wish to pay to support it. Thank you Mr Hat.

    We’re all free thinkers but we’re not all right all the time, and respect for others’ opinions and thoughts (unless the individual is obviously a troll) is the very signature of advanced society.
