A Match, A Razorblade and a Bullet

Have you ever looked at the top of a flagpole and wondered what was inside that gold ball? Well, according to stories passed down through the military, there are very specific items hidden inside those shiny pole-top spheres.

The exact items vary, depending on the telling of the tale, but the basis for the legend is always the same: a real life scenario of capture the flag, in which the military base is overrun by enemy forces. In order to protect the sacred Starts [SIC] & Stripes from falling into the wrong hands, a brave soldier must use the items hidden inside the gold ball on top of the flagpole to defend Old Glory to the death, or provide her with a proper burial. We’ll be installing a new flagpole this week, but there will be a 20led light instead of the traditional gold ball. That way there won’t be any need for “rocket’s red glare” or “bombs bursting in air” to give proof through the night. – Dr. Tar

  1. Last week, to kick off the Indy 500, Jewell sang the National Anthem. She was roundly criticized for her rendition, what do you think?

Not my favorite but I did not think it was that bad, I’ve heard a whole lot worse.

As long as the singer can carry a tune and displays body language that she holds reverence and respect for the song, I’m happy. And Jewell has sung it many times before, always killing it so I’ll cut her some slack.

  2. & no … that’s not a Chinese-made mistake in the flag depiction

it’s a depiction of the Star-Spangled Banner that flew over Ft. McHenry Fort on Sept. 13-14, 1814. it had 15 stars & 15 stripes, representing the 15 existing states at that time.

(after the War they decided to go back to the present design of 13 stripes & adding stars for new states … good idea … can you imagine 50 stripes running down a flag pole?!?!
