Newly Discovered Fat Cells Blamed for Midlife Waist Expansion

Study Finds

Research published in Science reveals a previously unknown type of fat cell that emerges specifically during middle age, driving rapid fat accumulation in the belly area. This discovery challenges conventional wisdom about middle-aged weight gain.

“A key finding from our work is that despite the low turnover rate of adipocytes in young adults, adipogenesis is unlocked during middle age,” the research team from City of Hope Medical Center and UCLA writes in their paper. In plain terms, our bodies begin making new fat cells at surprising rates once we reach our 40s, especially in the deep belly fat surrounding our organs. More

  1. …sooo, what if you try to calm the wife from the previous thread down by changing the direction of the conversation?

You know, by telling her SHE might be suffering from these newfangled fat cells ’cause she sure LOOKS like it…

  2. So do they propose these “newly discovered” fat cell just sprang into existence in the 1980s ??

Looking at pictures of humans the world over, then vs now, tells you it’s more than that.

Explain the morbid obesity of the youts, pre- “midlife”.
Our sedentary lifestyles yes, but there is definitely something fucky with our food.

  3. The article talks about blocking the pathway that triggers these middle age fat cells to activity. The drug company that develops the pill for that is going to be obscenely rich and we’ll look back upon liposuction and stomach stapling as medieval medicine in the late 20th century.

  4. loosing belly fat when you get above 60 is very difficult and time consuming. I often do 90 + hour fasting along with weight training walking biking and racquet ball. it’s really tough to stay trim and it is definitely a topic worth discussing

I also watched your link. He doesn’t mention metabolism. Arguably the biggest culprit in belly fat. Working large muscle groups heavy will boost your metabolism. Legs and back. And the rowing machine and the leg press will not do the job.

I have the same waste size now, at 68, as I did when I was 18. There are benefits to cancer I guess. LOL. But now I’m a man on a mission. I’ve been a weight lifter since I was 18. I got pretty big. Now I’m busting my butt trying to get it back. I would check out Creatine too. but check with your Doc first. But the biggest thing is probably testo levels. If you haven’t, get your testo levels checked. If you need TRT hit me up. I have the hot set up for TRT. Relatively cheap too.

  7. Creatine got a bad rap for being hard on the kidneys. Somebody just reviewed the original study and determined the half the subjects already had kidney disease. So I jumped back on it about 6 months ago. Previous to that I was net getting the gains I was looking for. Now I’m increasing weight every time I cycle through my 3 day split. I’m pretty happy with HMB and Creatine. It might be the magic cocktail for us old geezers.
