DirecTV Is Dropping OANN

U.S. satellite broadcaster DirecTV said on Friday it will drop far-right channel One America News (OAN) from its service when its contract expires, in a blow to the popular news network.

OAN, which rose to prominence amid the triumph and tumult of the administration of then-President Donald Trump, has been criticized for spreading conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election.

“We informed Herring Networks that, following a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract when our current agreement expires,” a DirecTV spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

AT&T has a 70% stake in DirecTV, after last year spinning off the satellite service, now an independently managed company. The U.S. telecommunications company entered into a deal with Herring Networks Inc in 2017, which included OAN and a little-watched lifestyle channel, AWE. DirecTV began carrying the networks in April that year. More

  1. “has been criticized for spreading conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic”

Conspiracy theories that have all been proven true; masks are ineffective, 6 feet social distancing is a made-up number, lockdowns did nothing but ruin business and the economy, fully vaxxed can not only get Covid but spread Covid, these vaccines were rushed out before proper due diligence, Covid was manufactured in a lab, Fauci has been lying all along, and the worst of them all, people will believe anything their government tells them and will willingly surrender their personal freedoms on the illusory promise of safety.

Anybody else see the absurdity in this sentence.

  3. @andoneinthechamber — Quite right. I know what a theory is, too, and wish that the common use of that word when the proper one is 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 had never cropped up.

A hypothesis is an proposed explanation merely as a basis for reasoning or argument, or as a premise from which to draw conclusions via logic.

A theory, on the other hand, is a hypothesis that has real support. The OED says a theory is…

𝑨 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒂; 𝒂 𝒉𝒚𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒔; 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒂𝒘𝒔, 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔, 𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒅.

Those denigrating what they call “conspiracy theories” should be using the term “conspiracy conjectures” and not even go so far as to say “conspiracy hypothesis”. But their misuse of the term is deliberate, of course. Just ask the CIA, who coined the term (and that’s a conspiracy 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭).

  4. IIRC, OANN can be accessed on any wifi device.
But, damn! DirecTV! Not making points in my book with this dick move.
OANN, the only TRUE news station.

  5. Told a liberal sister yesterday who’s been slowly waking up that she’s ‘been had’ regarding COVID to stop watching any media run by large corporations and get on the independent side of the Internet for information. Doubt she will, because like all Liberals I’ve ever known, she’s LAZY.

  6. 9 out of 10 satellite dishes I see are laying in the weeds or on roofs with with disconnected wires hanging down. Most people hate Direct TV as much as cable. I got rid of my TV so it isn’t a problem.
