A conversation about abortion with my Uber driver

With a client list that includes some of Hollywood’s biggest motion picture studios, the 30-something Uber driver who gave me a ride home from a doctor’s appointment searches out locations to shoot scenes for feature-length films and other video productions.

When I asked what he thought about Georgia’s new heartbeat abortion law, he jumped in with both left feet, saying the law is stupid and will be a financial disaster for movie industry employees in Georgia because of threats by motion picture producers to boycott the state.

This is the brief conversation we had right before he pulled into my driveway:

Uber driver: “The law is so stupid, men trying to tell women what they can’t do with their own body.”

Me: “I used to be pro-choice too, until I found out what’s involved in having an abortion.”

Uber driver: “What do you mean?”

Me: “Do you know how abortions are performed?”

Uber driver: “Not really.”

Me. “Well, for example, in a second-trimester surgical abortion, the abortion doctor uses what’s called a Sopher clamp, an instrument with serrated teeth on the business end.  The abortion doctor uses the Sopher clamp to probe inside the patient’s womb.  When he feels something, he clamps down and pulls hard, and out comes an arm or a —”

Before I could finish the sentence, my Uber driver raised his hand and pleaded, “Please, please.  I don’t want to hear any more!” more

  1. Abortion is the Pandora’s box of our society. When the law took effect, out flew more troubles than can be counted.

  2. I don’t have the courage to watch the video at the link. I never have the courage to read articles or view photos of WWII concentration camps, either. Sometimes the evil truth, as much as I know it’s out there, is simply too painfully powerful for me to see. But unlike liberals, I don’t deny its existence, I just try to be a small part of what fights to keep it from happening again.

  3. Brown Eyed Girl – Unfortunately, graphic details are apparently needed to impress insensitive and ignorant individuals such as that Uber driver.

  4. But the left doesn’t want anyone to see that video because they say it is obscene, as if they really care about obscenity in any other way.

  5. SMUDGE,
How quaint I guess it also that men impregnate women and want their child but have no say when said woman can’t be inconvenienced with a pregnancy and kills the child.

As a woman who had a Father, brothers, husband and sons, I get damn sick and tired of this damn war on men. Are some men sorry scum that pressure a woman into an abortion? Yes. Are some men sorry scum that don’t stick around and raise their children? Yes. However, many if not most men are good fathers and no man can ever choose to go into an abortion clinic and have their child ripped apart. Only sorry scum women can do that.

  6. My first child was one of the first victims when abortion was legalized in 1973. I found out years later by accident.

  7. Hambone. I’m sorry for your loss. If you haven’t done so yet, consider claiming your child, name your child and give your child to Jesus. Ask Jesus to baptize your son or daughter and keep him or her always. Ask God to forgive the child’s mother for you.

  8. I’m sorry Hambone.

I heard a man awhile back telling his story. His only child was aborted by his wife. Shortly there after he had an accident that left him unable to ever father another child. He had pleaded with her not to kill his child and even tried to sue her to prevent it, but before he could get a court date she killed their baby.

  9. This doctor came to the realization of how profoundly inhuman performing abortions were a little late {1200 babies late} but at least he did.
The question is how does he live with himself now?
I’ve done things in life that make me very uncomfortable to this day but nothing approaching this magnitude.
    Good luck to him.

“Abortion” is one of the troubles from the box.
    It is not the box.

    > How quaint: two men discussing abortion, as if they had no involvement in pregnancy.

Surely you’re not suggesting that men have more than no involvement in abortion!?
