U.S. taxpayers lose up to $521 billion a year to fraud across the federal government, according to a first-of-its-kind estimate.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office estimated annual fraud costs taxpayers between $233 billion and $521 billion annually, according to a new report published Tuesday. The fraud estimate’s range represents 3% to 7% of average federal obligations. The estimate was based on data from fiscal years 2018 through 2022. The government obligated almost $40 trillion from fiscal years 2018 through 2022, but had no reliable estimates of fraud losses. More

  1. Instead of creating a new agency, hire a bunch of retired accountants and bookkeepers and tell them that the fraudsters are endangering their social security and medicare. I bet these retired people wouldn’t give two “Fs” about who they catch. They’d probably help recover most of the lost money.

  2. Considering how much in taxes I pay (still pissed off about that) I would love for the Federal Government to be able to find (and jail) these tax scofflaws. But this assumes that anyone in the Federal Government knows their ass from their elbow, is even marginally competent in his jobs and is not crocked AF.

TBH, I would prefer they get their own house in order first. The waste, duplication and fraud within the government is in magnitude of ten (at least) to what ever monies they can’t get out of taxpayers.

They are not good stewards of whatever tax revenue they get, why would anyone want to give them more.

  3. “Federal Agency of Fraud” is probably the subtitle for most agencies.

Easy first step: fire each and every federal employee with unpaid federal taxes and/or school loans.
