A New York union leader whom Gov. Andrew Cuomo described as a “good friend” has “extensive ties to organized crime,” federal prosecutors alleged in court filings on Monday.

Hoping to keep labor bigwig James Cahill on a tight leash pending trial for corruption charges, prosecutors touted and previewed their evidence to the Southern District of New York’s Chief Judge Colleen McMahon.

“The evidence of his guilt is overwhelming, captured on both audio and video recordings and wiretaps on his phone,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Swergold wrote, in a letter first reported by the New York Daily News. More
