Angus King: No Evidence Yet for Public to Think Impeachment Is ‘Appropriate Path’

WFB: Sen. Angus King (I., Maine) said on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that he doesn’t think there is any publicly available evidence to date that would justify impeaching President Donald Trump.

“I don’t think that there’s evidence yet available to the public where there would be more or less a consensus that this was an appropriate path,” King said.

The senator was responding to a question from “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd about the recent filings from special counsel Robert Muller in regards to Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen.

“Given that the government is now saying the weight of the government is behind the charges that the president helped direct Michael Cohen to commit that crime – and as you said there is still a defense there for the president, he can claim he didn’t know it was a crime or at least a breaking of a campaign finance crime – Do you believe there’s already enough to start an impeachment inquiry?” Todd asked. “That doesn’t mean he would be impeached. In fact, is Congress almost obligated to open an inquiry at this point?

King argued impeachment would be the wrong path given the current information available.

“I don’t think so. I think impeachment is entirely different from criminal prosecution. And as you know, the Justice Department made a decision years ago in an opinion that a sitting president could not and should not be indicted. And so whether the president will ever face criminal charges with regard to this matter is an open question. But impeachment essentially, Chuck, is a political issue,” King said.

“My concern is that if impeachment is moved forward on the evidence that we have now, at least a third of the country would think it was just political revenge and a coup against the president. That wouldn’t serve us well at all. The best way to solve a problem like this to me is elections,” King added.  more here

  1. True to form, the left wing of the Democrat party lives in an echo chamber, and they hate Donald Trump. But as passionate as they claim to be about getting rid of Trump, they fail to see that at least an equal number of citizens passionately support Trump.

Impeachment, unless for a heinous and truly treasonous crime, will go nowhere because the Republicans control the Senate. But House Democrats are playing a dangerous game; impeachment will likely be seen as a petty attempt at revenge championed by left wing Democrats from safe districts. Leftists don’t see this, but a Trump impeachment would effectively damage, if not destroy any opportunity for Democrats to govern if they succeed in gaining the White House in 2020 – and may actually destroy their ability to have their candidate elected as President. Much of America will see the Democrats as ignoring America’s system of choosing its elected officials.

We are at a dangerous place right now. Democrat leaders are calling for harassment and violence against conservatives and Republicans. Tom Perez is attacking organized religion, and the social media giants are clearly engaging in censorship. Our major news organizations are little more than reincarnations of the old Soviet Pravda. Democrats and leftists are, by their statements and actions, calling for revolution and they may not like what they get if they succeed. The Democrats have always claimed that they have staked out the moral high ground, but now they are trying to force their views on an American public that, in a large part, doesn’t like to be told what to think or do.

The left wing OF BOTH PARTIES hates Don! Here are some Bush Republicans working hard to impeach Don: Brennan, Clapper, Comey (renounced the party last year – but when the immoral GWB promoted him he was a liberal GOPe), L. Lerner and Mueller.

All those named were Republicans when the unprincipled GWB promoted them!

If only the Dems were after him, Don would be home free. Its the Bush/Rove people that may harm Don!

Accurate synopsis of the D party as a whole. However, they’ve splintered into intersectionality e.g., socialists, greenies, and Marxists.
While Trump has reshaped the R party, there’s too many oppositional factions within that serves to split the “conservatives” away from his base.

Assuming your projection is based on historical backlash the Rs suffered as a result of Clinton’s impeachment, times have changed my friend. I wish I could share your optimism that “a moral high ground” exists, however, the “resistance” on both sides is in a lather.
