Michael Collins, the astronaut who flew Apollo 11’s command module around the Moon as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface in 1969, has died at the age of 90. Collins’ family said in a statement he passed away after a battle with cancer.
“He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side,” the statement read. “Mike always faced the challenges of life with grace and humility, and faced this, his final challenge in the same way. We will miss him terribly. Yet we also know how lucky Mike felt to have lived the life he did.” more
As more older gens depart we get into more trouble as a nation don’t we.
Sad to see him go.
Thank You for your service, Michael Collins.
He took one of the greatest photos in history.
Where it included the Earth and the lunar module while Niel Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin were in it.
A caption read “Every Human being ever born, alive, and dead are included in this picture with the exception of Michael Collins.”
Mission completed Major General enjoy your final flight to God.
RIP, Major General, Michael Collins.
RIP
Second star on the right, straight on till morning.
All three were true heroes. Bet not one in 100 college students at any Ivy League school can name the three A-11 astronauts. But 90 of 100 can name all the thugs killed by police that ignited riots in American cities.
Michael Collins was a member of a very distinguished American military family. His father, James Lawton Collins, was a graduate of West Point and retired as a Major General after service in World War I and World War II. He was a aid-de-camp to General John J. Pershing during the Philippine Insurrection and the Mexican Punitive Expedition. During World War I, James Lawton Collins served with the 1st Infantry Division. His oldest son, James Lawton Collins, Jr., also graduated from West Point, and fought with the 86 Infantry Division from Utah Beach through France and into Germany. After two years service in Viet Nam, he retired as a Brigadier General in 1970. Michael Collins’ uncle, J. Lawton Collins, was the Commanding General of the 25th Division on Guadalcanal and New Georgia. He later commanded the VII Army Corp from Normandy through the end of the war in Europe. He retired as a four star General after forty years of service. Michael Collins lived up to his family’s sterling reputation for military service and love of country. God speed, Major General Michael Collins.
