‘Asbestos-Tainted’ Baby Powder lawsuit Costs Johnson & Johnson $29 Million

Los Angeles Times

Johnson & Johnson must pay about $29 million to a dying California woman who blamed asbestos-tainted talc for causing her cancer. The jury decision is the company’s latest loss in nationwide litigation over its iconic baby powder.

Jurors in state court in Oakland held J&J responsible Wednesday for Teresa Leavitt’s mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure. The panel, which included a lawyer and a state court judge, also found that the world’s largest maker of healthcare products didn’t warn Leavitt that its baby powder was tainted with the carcinogen. 1. I’ll bet this one is appealed. The moment mesothelioma was mentioned with baby powder in the same sentence I’ll bet thousands of asbestos lawyers who were running out of clients went out for triples at the local bar. The reward is likely to be reduced on appeal or the case dismissed entirely. I do feel some compassion for the woman but all too often now the civil courts seem to be treated as either a lottery or some sort of balance because nature gave you a raw deal and somebody has to pay for that.

  2. The problem with all this is that there is not a single case of mesothelioma associated with the use of baby powder. Mesothelioma is the signature cancer of asbestosis.

  3. Absolutely no mention of the millions of babies this powder has been used on. Where is the outrage? Where are the lawsuits? Most importantly, where are the babies verified as powder abuse victims as a basis for the lawsuits? There are lots of children who are and have been cancer victims.

  4. So were these folks huffing the powder? I am sorry that they have mesothelioma but there really are plenty of places one can go to inhale asbestos. Of course I have known old sailors and plumbers who worked with and around the stuff for years. A few died of cancer but then so did my bride, and as far as I know she was never around asbestos. I know, I know asbestosis has a unique signature…… sorry, but the trace amounts of asbestos found in some samples of talcum powder were extremely minute.

  5. Holy shit, to think of all the times, as a mechanic, in the very early ‘70’s I would use an air hose to blow all the dust off the brake linings and the associated parts in order to do a brake job…..

I have no related afflictions…. As far as I know.

And, I’m guessing….without some sort of physical impairment….I have no case.
I should get some free stuff simply because I survived it.
