I decided before I even knew what the painting was that I loved this painting, not because of its subject matter, but because now leftists know what it’s like to have to tolerate art.

(NEWSER) – A painting featured in the Whitney Biennial, which opened last Friday in New York, is proving so controversial that not only is it sparking protests but fellow artists are outright calling for its destruction, the Guardian reports. The painting, Open Casket by Dana Schutz, is a depiction of Emmett Till’s body after the 14-year-old black boy was murdered by white men in 1955. Till had been falsely accused of flirting with a white woman. Schutz is also a white woman, and that’s the problem, according to those protesting her painting. “It’s not acceptable for a white person to transmute Black suffering into profit and fun,” artnet News quotes an open letter from artist Hannah Black. More than 30 other non-white artists have cosigned the letter.

While Black is calling for the destruction of Open Casket, another artist, Parker Bright, has been standing in front of it for hours at a time since Friday, blocking views of the painting while wearing a shirt that reads “Black death spectacle.” He calls Open Casket a more

  4. I looked at that painting before reading any of the commentary, and I don’t get it. Here’s what I saw: Possibly a dog lying curled up on a couch (or maybe an angry raccoon), with a highway arrow sign going by on the right, pointing forward.

    Anyway – the curled up dog gave me the thought -BFH could do better than that.

  6. Or alternatively, Billy, she could hold a public burning of the painting, torched by the nearest living relative of Emmett or the nearwst BLM rep, and then smear herself with the ashes. At which point she’d be accused of disrespect.

    Not really. If she’s going to have a career in art, she’ll have to toe the PC line. She will grovel rather than give up her place in what she sees as a prestigious, high status profession and class.

    BTW, the left have been pimping and exploiting this horrible story for years. The left is lying if they say a bunch of fundraisers weren’t based on this tragedy.
