Did Noem Shoot Herself in the Paw?

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem may have ruined her chances of becoming Donald Trump’s running mate with her confession about shooting an “untrainable” 18-month-old dog who attacked a neighbor’s chickens, onlookers say. Did she break the law? Did she think Trump would be impressed? Here’s what to know:

Newser-

  • Professional opinion: Professional hunting dog trainer Dan Lussen says it’s irrational to put down a pheasant-hunting dog who goes after chickens. As a pup, the dog wouldn’t know the difference between the two animals, he tells Rolling Stone.
  • Legality: Per the Guardian, Noem appears to have violated a state law against owning a dog that harasses or kills poultry, but also another law stating a person is allowed to kill such a dog “except on the premises of the owners of said dog or dogs.” Noem said she killed the dog on her own property.
  • A bad bet?: In sharing the story, and another about killing three horses, some see Noem as “deliberately sabotaging her VP chances,” per Semafor. Others wonder if she was “making a bet dog-killing would look tough to Trump.”
  • VP out the window?: “Trump isn’t a dog person necessarily, but I think he understands that you can’t choose a puppy killer as your [VP] pick, for blatantly obvious reasons,” a source close to Trump tells the New York Post. The source adds Noem’s chance of being selected as Trump’s VP was low before, but now it’s “impossible.”

  1. She doesn’t look at animals like non farm people.
If the dog was 18 mos old it should not be going after chickens.
I knew someone whose dog jumped out of the back of his truck and went after a deer without being commanded and he put the dog down.
He said once a dog gets the taste of another animal by killing that animal itself they’re going to do it again.
Hunting dogs aren’t trained to kill, they’re trained to retrieve.

  2. She promoted and signed a law destroying the first Amendment regarding criticism of Israel and whatever else they want to call “antisemitic.” THAT is what should have finished her off.

  3. I can see an argument as to why she should have put the dog down (also the goat). But I think everyone agrees that it was really, really stupid to write about it in her book as a flex and then to double down when it came up. Right or wrong is no longer relevant, in particular because this has put her ego on display.

  4. I lived in rural Michigan in high school, and if a dog was caught harassing livestock or chasing down & injuring deer, then you were obliged to kill it. And many people executed their own old & sick or infirm dogs.

  5. A lot of animal lovers in this nation are going to fixate on this and the democrats will keep the spotlight focused there for as long as she tries to take a place on the national stage.

She may well have a political career in S. Dakota, but she’ll never be allowed to live this down outside her own state.

  6. Her bigger problem(s) were suspicion of shaking up with Corey Lewandowski and gettting kicked off almost every Indian Sovereign territory in South Dakota for accusing them of corruption (!!!???) with mexican cartels. All that was by-passed by focus on a mercy killing of a dog, and who knows the dog could have had a brain tumor or some other pathology but that spotlight is harsh and wont go away.

  7. beachmom – I agree with you and LCD. That’s just what was done, however today’s perception of things is very different. I do think she deep sixed herself by writing about it.

  8. pfft. her writings should have sparked a conversation about the cruel and unusual methods of putting down dogs in the vet industry. a bullet would have been a much better death for my old girl. bring back the gas chambers, much more humane. none of my pets are going to the vet ever again. its neanderthal with the vets needles and getting the dosage right. gas chambers are outlawed mostly, bullet next best thing. yes those are hard decisions!

  9. For some reason reminds me of when Al Roker admitted to shitting his pants at the White House. Everyone’s had embarrassing bodily accidents, but you don’t have to tell the world about them.

  10. Done, she maybe a farmer, but she’s also a hunter. When you run across a bad apple hunting pup you make sure it can’t breed and put it up for adoption. Most those dogs make excellent service dogs.

  11. As for the “Legality” paragraph:

It is written about someone else’s land and dog.

Apply the part about it being illegal to own a dog that chases chickens and you’ll find they have a responsibility to put the dog down.

The logic in that paragraph is like listening to David Hogg tell you what the 2A “really” means.

  12. This may speak to her practicality as a farmer/hunter but it disqualifies her as a politician of any value in winning the hearts and minds of wimmen voters –which is the primary role of most women being considered for VP.

  13. I’m with Harry. Why in the hell would you put something like that in print, especially when you’re a nationally known politician?? All I can say is . . . . STOOOOO…PIDDDDDDDD!!!!! I liked her a lot, but she’s gone onto my waste pile of worthless Republicans.

  14. A dog walks into a wild west saloon. He’s wearing a sling over one of his front feet. He has a loaded six-gun on his hip. He says in a strong western accent: “I’m looking for the man who shot my pa”.

  15. Animal rights idiot won’t shut up, but she did the right thing. The dog killed chickens for sport, the dog turned on it’s owner.
We once would warn city folks moving out to the country thinking their dogs could run free once when their dogs went after our livestock or poultry.
People became too damn stupid so we quit warning. The problem gets taken care of and we keep our mouths shut.

BTW, I have a personal experience with a dog that turned on it’s owner, that dog ended up biting me in the face when I was 12 years old, hundreds of stitches and a round of rabies shots was the damage caused to me. Later we found out they knew this about the dog, but never bothered to put the dog up or post warning signs. They didn’t force them to put their dog down as would be done today and it later attacked a kid on a bike and then went after a cop and got a bullet to the head.
It wasn’t what you would call an aggressive breed, half collie and half german shepherd, but looked like a collie.
I see so called rescue groups all the time have adoption days in pet and farm stores with dogs in cages that say the dog will bite. Why bring those dogs to public places with kids and why is a dog that is known to bite not put down?

  16. Well, in her world, putting down a dog that potentially could attack is admirable.
It seems she expected positive feedback for what she considers a very responsible decision. That’s why she wrote about the incident.

The problem is most Americans are very far removed from frontier agrarian methods of survival. So she just comes off as cruel.

She should remember the wise adage, “Know your audience”, before proudly declaring any more of her “accomplishments”.

  17. Years ago we took in a rescue dog. His markings showed some German Shepard but he was a mutt, probably around 5 years old when we got him. He was really appreciative of his new home but there was a side to him that I wasn’t completely comfortable with. His aggressiveness showed a bit more frequently and I finally had to take care the situation. I told his previous owner that Max wasn’t around and why, and he told me he was seeing the same tendencies. I had two little kids at the time and he encouraged me to take the dog. I lost a lot of respect for him about that.

  18. “The dog killed chickens for sport, the dog turned on it’s owner”

It’s a BIRD DOG. Last time I checked Chicken were birds. No shit it killed chickens. Turned on it’s owner. Strap a shock collar around your neck and stand on that button.
Just so we’re clear, I’m not an animal rights idiot. I’ve been known to shoot and eat many animals. Killing that dog was extreme. Writing about it in a book has got to be intentional political suicide. Nobodies that stupid.

  19. I had a GSP that I taught to bird hunt from 7 weeks old. She was about 4 years old and got out of the pasture, headed straight for the neighbors duck pond. Carnage ensued! I paid for the ducks and kept a better eye on her….Was I supposed to kill her for the sport that she was born, breed and trained for? HELL NO!….I also had a Lab mix (probably Pit) that got fuckin’ mean. She attacked my GSP and tore her up pretty bad. They had lived together for 4 years. I don’t know what snapped in her head, but I had to beat the shit out of her with a shovel before she quit….First trip to the vet was to get Ruby 150 stitches in her hind quarter. Second trip was to have the Lab X put down….

I had to put down 5 of my seven goats because they got old. Two died in their sleep. I hated that…The last goat was almost 20 years old…

  20. @ 99th Squad Leader

“The problem is most Americans are very far removed from frontier agrarian methods of survival.”

They certainly are and not just agrarian methods of survival but from reality itself. I’m pretty pessimistic about the future of this country after next November no matter how the election, if we even have one, turns out. The left has already shown us that they’d rather destroy the nation than govern according to the Constitution.

Hope that I’m wrong but if not, there will be a great many people that will be attending the “School of Hard Knocks”.

Prime example of that. Gun control decisions made by inner city metrosexuals. What the heck do they know about a ranchers reality in Montana or Wyoming. I’m thinking they’re going to learn the tactical angle real soon with all the “New Arrivals”. Oh Hum.

  22. Brad, my Dad raised all kinds of hunting dogs, including bird dogs, guess what bird dogs are trained to flush birds out, not touch the bird, just as retrievers are trained to retrieve without putting a mark on a bird. In addition you can have your ass sued when a dog kills chickens. An old friend of mine had a dog that got into his neighbor’s chickens, he thought they were asking too much for them and offered them a fraction, they took his ass to court and proved with receipts how much the chickens cost them, how much feed he had in them, how much to repair the fence his dogs tore up, plus he had to pay their attorney fees and all court costs. A flock of chickens ended up costing him over $8000 and that was 25+ years ago. He came home and put a bullet in both of his dog’s heads.
Any damn dog that turns on it’s owner should be put down. Why would you pass on that problem to someone else? Why would you risk a kid being attacked?
As for shock collars I’ve never used them, but know a guy with a very well behaved Rottweiler and he was trained with a shock collar. He has never showed aggression to him or anyone. As for how hard they shock, not really that hard, I have tried them to see and it’s a lot less than an electric fence. I have an electric fence up to keep my aussies in the yard, not because they would bite anyone or because they chase or kill my animals, my livestock guardians would kick their ass if they even thought about it, but because I wanted them trained to stay in the yard. Now it packs a huge punch and they tested it a few times and found out, but they never turned on me, if they had as much as I like those dogs, they would have been put down, because I would never risk my grandchildren being bit.

  23. “Brad, my Dad raised all kinds of hunting dogs, including bird dogs, guess what bird dogs are trained to flush birds out”

You can stop there. You have no idea what you are typing about. Do you know what a retriever is? They don’t flush. Good night.

  24. Agreed, mod. Leftist commies are capable of anything. Don’t put it past them to create an Apocalyptic situation – no power, water or fuel for everyone except their cadre elite.
They’re not that desperate quite yet, but when, not if it happens best not to be a city dweller.

In that event, you can bet hoodrats, woke Demwits and illegals will stampede rural areas and suburbs. Hell will break loose, but people who have lived in rural parts of the US for generations will be prepared to defend their property, land and sovereignty – exactly the way it should happen. God bless the heritage and US constitutional right of a well-regulated Militia.

  25. My GSP pointed , flushed and retrieved…She had to taste the innards of the quail so she chomped it a bit and then she handed it to you…bite free…If your dog kills chickens it’s YOUR fault…
