I can remember being told I should read a book over the summer. What was I thinking when I perused the list of the classics? I should have been looking for an author like Alex Gino!
“It” is the author that the Westland Middle School in Maryland recommended. The book is called “Rick.”
The story of Rick centers on a 12-year-old child who is “encouraged to rethink his sexual orientation.”
A subplot involves a young person who is gender-transitioning. Another kid in the book performs in a cabaret as a drag queen. Rick, the protagonist, goes to an after-school club promoting “LGBTQIAP+ rights” where they push the narrative that you should always be questioning your sexuality. (Forget those natural instincts!! You probably are gay, or some iteration, but certainly NOT CIS – heaven forbid!)
The club also encourages Rick to figure out his pronouns.
As if that isn’t enough, Rick’s grandfather tells him that he is a crossdresser and then takes him to an event while he’s dressed as a woman. That’s normal.

My oldest son is forty-six. When he was in the second grade, his teacher gave her students a work assignment that was all about the singer Prince. It told what a great guy he was and how he was brave for daring to be different and that looking the way he did was something to aspire to. I went to the school to meet with his teacher and told her that she had better not give my son crap like that again. I told her I considered Prince a weird pervert, like Michael Jackson, who wasn’t to be held up to young boys as a role model. I could tell she wasn’t getting it. During that summer break before he was to enter the third grade, a teacher friend of ours informed us that our son was going to be one of three white kids in a class of twenty-eight, the rest being black. I had no problem with my children going to school with black kids, but that ratio didn’t reflect the surrounding community. I realized that my son was being targeted for retribution by the school. I rented a spot in an RV park in a nearby town with a conservative school board and acquired an RV to put there. We used that as our address and often stayed there to keep the school board satisfied. We shortly began to build our new home on property that was in that district, so they supported us having our kids there. It was expensive, but it was worth it.
