And for owners of electric vehicles, says Molly Hart, spokesperson for AAA, the auto club group, be advised that cold weather decreases your driving range almost by half.
“When it dips to 20 degrees and the HVAC system is being used to heat the inside of the vehicle, the average driving range is decreased by 41 percent,” Hart says. That means instead of getting 100 miles of combined urban and highway driving, the range at 20 degrees would be reduced to 59 miles. Additional
Electric cars are such a joke. Energy density of a lithium cell vs a tank of kerosene is almost exactly 100X better for the fuel. Then you have to factor all those extra thousands of pounds of battery you are carrying around! It is utterly absurd.
Strange. My Diesel loves cold weather.
20? It was -3 this morning when I got to work in Spokane. What does that temperature do to the range of a Planet Saver?
The trilogy of hoaxes: Climate change, EV’s and Covid BS. Yet the sheeple lap it up. Absolutley mind boggling to me.
Bundle up because I hear the heaters in EVs suck hind tit.
We found grandma frozen in her EV.
Coming over to our house Christmas night.
( you guys know what music goes with that )
Maybe you get to grandma’s but the power goes out in an ice storm upon arrival and stays out for 10 days. Hope you brought a change of clothes and a bunch of food because you ain’t goin’ anywhere at that point.
Remember: “95% of electric vehicles are still on the road…the other 5% made it to charging stations.”
– Somebody much wittier than me
Burn more coal to charge those environmentally friendly vehicles!!!!
Stupid on stilts.
Hmmmmm.
They didn’t mention that the extreme cold also significantly reduces the ability to hold a charge, reduces the discharge rate and also charging a battery when cold reduces the battery’s life.
Most e-cars have battery heaters to reduce these issues, but guess what….it reduces the run time because it takes energy to heat the batteries.
I hope it leaves hundreds of libtards stranded this weekend, just for the shear stupidity of thinking an EV is really worth the hype…and for believing in climate change.
The story I heard was that Grandma had her EV plugged in but Lil Greta Ridinghood (fresh off a green energy committee meeting) found out it was plugged into a coal fired electric grid. She tied Grandma up and stole her EV and luggage and was hired by the Biden administration to oversee green energy nuclear….
I haven’t been this cold since I lived in the CO mountains, over 10 years ago. So glad to have come up here to freeze my ass off. My truck fired right up this morning though. It doesn’t touch the winters at 8600′ north of Steamboat but it’ll do. Walking along the Straights this morning is pretty awesome.
Does the horse still know the way?

to BRAD, I read about the “Self Cooling” effect of an idling Diesel engine in the cold. Is this true? That the idling engine is very efficient, and by drawing in all that cold air for a very lean combustion, it actually cools itself.
Diesels love cold air, if you get them old ones started.
Currently 3 degrees. Forecast…
“Snow, mainly before 11pm. Widespread blowing snow, mainly after midnight. Low around -8. Wind chill values as low as -34. Blustery, with a west northwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.”
Many years back I had a VW diesel Rabbit and had a part time job where I would simply leave it running and locked up with the spare keys in my pocket. Was kinda nice getting in a warm vehicle to drive home in with everyone else struggling to get theirs started. Also had a driving range of around five hundred miles regardless of weather.
EV’s make as much sense as every other liberal idea.
NIdahoCatholic, if you had an EV and drove the approximately 30 miles to Spokane from Coeur d’ Alene on an extremely cold morning like today you might be lucky to get back to Post Falls on a full charge if you’re lucky. My brother and his 3rd wife just bought a new Nissan Leaf EV recently, I just laughed at him when I saw him a couple of weeks ago. He uses it to deliver Meals on Wheels, good luck with that when it craps out in our very cold weather. He still has a Honda Element which may be a clown car but at least it will run in cold weather.

I’ve read similar but can’t verify. My LBZ gets about 2 mpg better mileage in cold weather and noticeable power increase. I put a cold air intake on it right after it was out of warranty and gained 2 mpg better mileage and instantaneous turbine response. I won’t drive anything else.
All these milage figures also assume a new battery, as battery reserve tends to deplete with use, giving less and less hours of operation with each subsequent charge. Lithium is the worst because of the steep drop-off in power makes even estimating it with a voltmeter problematic.
I have worked with fully electric, battery powered industrial autonomous vehicles for over a quarter century now, so I can tell you this from experience; I would not trust them over the horizon, and I CERTAINLY would not trust my life to them.
Electric vehicles are not going to evacuate you from a hurricane or other natural disaster.
Inch and a half of snow overnight and current temp sitting at -1f. The dog is still sleeping so I don’t have to go out just yet. Yay?
Could electric cars with wood-burning fireplaces be next?
