Four Deputies Kill Themselves in Two Months

Newsweek

Four current and former members of a Texas sheriff’s office have died by suicide in the past six weeks.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Community Engagement Division announced the deaths of Deputy Christina Kohler and retired Deputy Maria Vasquez on March 17, a few weeks following the deaths of former Deputy William Bozeman and former Deputy Long Nguyen. All four took their own lives.

“Our hearts are heavy,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. More

  1. When one hears this in a cluster, its sometimes easy to put quotes around “suicide”. Its a good time to start looking for common threads.

    However, it is not impossible.

Lotta cops eat their guns. Job gets to them, they see only bad things. We had one, a K9 handler, left instructions for caring for the dog and not much else.

No one calls 911 when things are going good. You need to get out when it gets to you. I got out of EMS mostly because mentals and peds and the futility of some things and lack of justice in others was starting to eat me, and I didnt have the double whammy that a LEO does that people ALSO hate them for doing their sworn duty.

And police arent grat at seeking help for themselves either, even in-house help like Critical Incident Stress Debreifings with other cops. Theres a “tough guy” mentality that often sees seeking help as weakness, or so it seems to an outsider.

I couldnt do what police do, Ive worked with enough to know that. I would hesitate too long to use force where force is needed, and probably get people killed because I just dont have the instincts for it.

But some police discover THEY cant continue to do what they do, either.

And when they dont seek help or exit the profession when they reach that point, this can be the result.

Although with so many on one department so close together, one has to wonder if there’s a common stressor somewhere.

Prayers for the friends, families, and colleauges of those officers. May the Lord strengthen them and guide them in their hour of need, and cause those these souls left behind to seek the comfort and counsel of the Lord and of each other, that no more lives are lost in this most desperate of ways.

  2. Not enough information was provided to draw any practical inferences. Only one was active and both those females looked too young to have experienced prolonged life-altering trauma.

We don’t know if disciplinary action was the impetus for the other three not being active.

Most agencies require “shrink” visits and evaluations following any shootings or incidents involving deaths, and their continuing education and training days involve repeated reminders that mental health sessions are always available at no cost.

Lowering standards to satisfy dopey quotas and DEI requirements allows people not mentally qualified or sufficiently versed in the requisite people skills does a huge disservice, not only to the applicant but to his/her beat partner who is counting on them for back-up if needed.

  4. BENITO. My Cali brother. It’s important to know who are enemies are. Here’s my opinion. What’s left of the Libtard part have turned into anarchists. Per rules for radicals. Instigated by the Halfrican. They know they’ve lost it all. They have no bench. Now they will resort to violence. I read a post on Reditt today about the big Tesla destruction event planned in Reno tomorrow. Over 1,000 responses. Most read like this, You touch my car I will kill you. It was freaken awesome. Will that stop them? I doubt it. Reno is not Las Vegas. It’s going to be fun. Eyes twitch my friend.

  5. Not out of my mind. Just not falling for headlines.
1 in 5,000 current employees and 3 former employees. 4 in ???. How many thousands of people are we talking about?
The stats are from the past 6 weeks, what happened in the past 12 months?
    Context is important.

Wjen I read the headline, I first thought of the “Acting Assistant Deputy to the Chief” type of bureaucrat. But those never kill themselves in times of stress.. They just burrow in deeper and find a federal judge.

  7. Two would be a coincidence, but four? I would hope the Sheriff’s office would be looking at connections between the 4. Cartels are pretty active, especially in border states. Who have they arrested in the last year?
