My Great Uncle was a blacksmith. He forged knives out of sections of steel cable. He said that was the best alloy for holding an edge. He left the woven stranded cable (un-hammered) as the handle. They look cool, and they really do hold their edge.

Nope. He died long before I was born. I learned about him from my Dad. I inherited one knife he made, but it has a wooden handle. My brother has the only one with a cable handle.
