4. Things get interesting when you have Grizz hunting in your backyard.

5. Yeah, it’s all cute and fun and games until the bears have to be put down because now they associate humans with food and they’ve become a nuisance.

   There was a sow bear and cubs that had wintered in a highway culvert near a local bar here. People thought it was cute to throw food to the bears from their cars and take pictures. It was all entertaining until the Mom and one of her cubs had to be destroyed because… they had become habituated to people feeding them and the mother was unwilling to forage for normal bear fare anymore.

   Here’s the sad sorted story.

I was a skiff man on a salmon purse netter out of Homer Alaska in my late 30’s….about 1995….we were fishing Prince Williams Sound…..another boat we fished with had a deck hand that made his own single pull bows and hunted bear….he said that young black bear was the best eatin’ you’ve ever had….but I digress…he had a video where he had hunted a 9 foot brown bear down near a river….his father was backing him with a .308…the bear was downwind and this fella had one pull of the bow to let it go….then he needed to hide and see if the bear died because the bear was gonna go and hunt who hurt him, if he wasn’t badly injured….AMAZING video. but he pulled the cork on the shot as the wind changed….he was just about to pull….this was the VHS days and I don’t remember his name….the size of brown bear/grizz is mind numbing….

10. This is a problem up in Old Forge, NY. People fed the deer (deer love them some ‘Nilla Wafers) at the side of the road and the bears started to get into the act. People would feed them while still inside the cars. I saw one stick his head into the car to grab a cookie from a kid. I thought, holy crap, he could take that kid right out through the window. People are crazy.

    There are garbage dump bears that lose their fear of people and have to be put down or transported far away. Fortunately we only have the smaller black bears in NY; they top out usually around 400 lbs. or so. I can’t image a bear twice that size.

11. 400 lbs. BIG. BIG and STRONG. I used to love wandering in the woods, and bears were never a worry. In the past ten years, in Upstate NY, bear populations have exploded. Now I worry at my in town address because there is a small preserve at a collage nearby. BEARS and deer galore. Out at my rural acreage it’s worse – well after finding a den, and scat, I don’t go anymore. If both my Dobes were still alive … maybe, but I wouldn’t have wanted them at risk just for nature walks.

12. See, I know how powerful a 70 lb. Dobe is – so a 400 lb. bear scares the shit outta me.
