House Investigates The Virgin Islands’ Emergency Order Allowing The Seizure Of Firearms

DC:

Two House committees are investigating Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp’s emergency order allowing national guardsmen to confiscate legally-owned firearms ahead of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Republican Reps. Rob Bishop of Utah and Bob Goodlatte of Virginia sent a letter to Mapp on Wednesday, asking for documentation on the order and whether or not any firearms were actually seized under the emergency order.

Both lawmakers worried Mapp’s order could violate Americans’ Second Amendment right to bear arms.

“Citizens deserve a clear answer on how the government of the Virgin Islands intends to implement this and any future emergency executive orders that may impact their constitutional right to bear arms and defend themselves in an emergency,” Bishop and Goodlatte wrote.   More here

  1. The storm is over. Long gone. Whether acted on or not, those who kept allegiance to that chain of command, sleep among those they targeted. Not the fishes. Those citizens deserve a clear path to the ovens. Not answers.

  2. Emergency Executive Orders are the last refuge of a Tyrant.
The National Guard commanders should have recognized this as an illegal order and refused to follow them.

  4. I remember Mapp’s confiscation order. But the Trump Admin quickly countermanded Mapp’s order, showing him the federal legislation that was passed after the Katrina debacle, forbidding the Gummint from confiscating legally-owned firearms leading up to, during, and after a natural disaster.

The Daily Caller got its facts wrong. This confiscation order is not only not in effect now, it never went into effect in the first place.
