19-year-old Rap artist, Lil Nas X released a track titled “Old Town Road” back in December. The song grew in popularity among teens on social media, making it to #19 on the Country Billboard Charts. That was until it was removed for not actually being a country song.
In a statement to “Roll Stone,” Billboard declared ““When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” More
Some have gone beyond declarations of unfairness and right into accusations of discrimination and racism against Billboard. More
Who Cares?
Country & Western music died a long time ago with Haggard, Cash, Robbins, Clark, Sons of the Pioneers, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Lefty Frizzell, Johnny Horton, etc., etc., etc. (I would list Charlie Pride but he is still around.
BTW, the song a just a little bit of banjo pickin’ and the beginning and end, the rest is mixed and dubbed.
It sucks whatever it is and I say that because I don’t really consider what is called country music these days country music either.
Not country. Inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2. Nothing but autotune and the usual garbage.
Appropriating the Old West now.

That video is a bunch of rubbish, by the way. The auditor determines the efficacy. For the artist to arrogate himself to the attributes of the Deity… to DEFINE… is absurd.
Today’s “country” is very similar to rap; lyrics espousing the most negative stereotypes of the target demographic sang with faked accents.
