Kim Potter found guilty in shooting death of Daunte Wright

PM.

On Thursday, a Minneapolis jury found former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter guilty of all charges in connection to the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright.

Potter claimed that she accidentally shot Wright on April 11, 2021, after she mistakenly reached for her pistol rather than her taser during a traffic stop.

Potter was arrested in April, and charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter charges.

According to NBC, “The charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years and 10 years, respectively.”

During Potter’s testimony last week, she tearfully described the “chaotic” scene leading up to the shooting.

Wright was being arrested for an outstanding weapons charge and attempted to enter his car again. Potter stated that she feared for the safety of fellow officer Sgt. Mychal Johnson, who was reportedly struggling with Wright from the passenger side of his vehicle.

Potter had her Glock fostered on her right hip, and her Taser holstered on her left. Footage played by the prosecution showed Potter holding the Glock in her hand for around five seconds before she shot.

  1. The elements of the crime were not satisfied, not even close, no culpable mental state, no malice, no intent. This is a horrible decision, made by a weak jury who succumbed to angry threats of a mob who cares nothing for justice or even the facts of the case. Officer Potter deserved better than this.

  2. I’ll admit that I haven’t followed this case very closely, but what I have read and heard does not support an innocent verdict.

And this description even fortifies my opinion:

“…Potter had her Glock fostered on her right hip, and her Taser holstered on her left. Footage played by the prosecution showed Potter holding the Glock in her hand for around five seconds before she shot…”

Chaotic situation or not, there are too many facts/inconsistencies that call into question her defense. The above being a major one. Does a taser really resemble a Glock that closely, as to be mistaken for one?

  3. @stirrin

We should remember that a verdict of innocence does not mean that she is guiltless or did nothing wrong (she did), what it does mean is that of the charges filed against her, the elements were not satisfied.

It was that gutless creep Keith Ellison who wanted first degree manslaughter charges filed. This charge involves intent, the party acted with intent to “kill” another. This was an accident, negligent, absolutely, but not first degree manslaughter.

    You might have heard of it but there was a similar case several years ago here in the Bay Area where a BART cop, while trying to subdue a suspect, mistook his firearm for his Taser and killed the suspect;

He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, sentenced to 2 years but served only one. I expected something similar to happen to this woman.

  4. @Rich – I will grant you that I did not pay close attention to the actual charges that were filed and those on which she was convicted – partly due to the fact that they weren’t prominently noted – and so, I passed judgement based on incomplete facts.

So, yes she was guilty, but on what degree it should be, I do not know.

  5. Everyone, and I do mean everyone is missing the most important. What Officer Potter did was,for someone with 20 or so years on the force negligent in the extreme … if she had been on the street all the time

My guess is her career niche became managing the precinct, which means she had lost all the instincts and reflexes needed to work the street. So why was she out there?

Most likely because because the backstabbing leftists pols and the defund the police assh*les caused a lot of street cops to walk. So they threw her into the breech where she was in over her head. The point here is BLM and the media and Dems are the true guilty party

And when the inevitable happened, the chickenshit pols stabbed HER in the back

  6. One bullshit thing I read about this:
“Anthony Luckey, pulled over Wright for having expired license plate tags and an air freshener hanging from his rear-view mirror.”

    Air freshener?
Meanwhile here in Vegas speed limits, traffic lights, stop signs, headlights etc. are only suggestions.
Oh and you can have totally black tinted windows.

  7. There doesnt have to be actual intent to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter which is based on the theory of negligent homicide. You only have to be guilty of negligence. If you are a street cop and dont keep your skills up or if you dont get off the streets when you know your skills are eroding, that could be consideted negligent

But if Kim Potter’s street skills eroded because she had settled into a career managing paperwork and reasonably expects to finish her career doing this .. and she is suddenly ordered back on the street, is she supposed to instantly become a street cop again?

If there is negligence, it would be more on whoever ordered her back on the street, or whoever caused the critical cop shortage that forced Potter onto the street

  8. My son was a Police Sergeant training a rookie under similar circumstances except the perp remained in the vehicle

Stupid rookie reached in to take the keys and the perp took off with the kids hands caught in the steering wheel.

He aimed the vehicle at my son and was shot immediately. Made it 25 miles before he bled out.

Wanted Chicago enforcer sent down to ride herd on the local crew.

Today my son would face manslaughter charges for popping a Shitcongo Street thug.

America is fucked…on the other hand two different idiot Demonrat cop hating politicians were carjacked at gunpoint today so here’s hoping one gets wacked by a future Nobel Laureate.

Maybe that will change the narrative but I doubt it. Especially if the pol is white.

Point is the shoot in MN was justified given the danger to rookie but who gives a shit about some rookie when you can crucify a cop?

This piece of shit left another black kid half brain dead for life and was a rapist to boot but justice has been served to his family. They must be so proud for raising such a saint.

They will all be future millionaires but 6 innocent white folk are in the ground today while a black supremist is a jailhouse hero. Doubt any of their families will be compensated.

Until you yourself experience a life or death split second decision to live or die you really have no valid perspective.

Our society is doomed. Planet of the Apes is just around the corner and is already here in blue cities.

  9. “There doesnt have to be actual intent to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter which is based on the theory of negligent homicide.”

Except that this was NOT the charge filed against her, it was first degree manslaughter, which does involve “intent to kill”.

“But if Kim Potter’s street skills eroded because she had settled into a career managing paperwork and reasonably expects to finish her career doing this”

I don’t know where you are getting this from. Officer Potter was a field training officer, she was training and in charge of that trainee that did a miserable job securing Wright in the first place.

She did testify that she never discharged a taser before, even in training which suggests to me that better training by all the officers is in order. But there was nothing that I heard while listening to the trial that suggested she was unfit or unqualified to work the streets.

  10. Her Taser was on her LEFT HIP while he Lethal Pistol was on HER RIGHT HIP! What happened was she had an Adrenaline Rush which instantly moved to tunnel vision and the loss of the ability to think properly… this mistake could have been avoided with Training and Time! The victim wasn’t innocent but he didn’t pose a deadly threat to the officer!

  11. The “victim” should not have been a dumb-@$$ and resisted arrest. He did not deserve to die but then I don’t see how it can be said that the officer intended to kill him either when you see how she reacted after shooting him.

I’m sure he would have gone on to be a pillar of his community once he straightened out his life.
“Daunte Wright had multiple criminal charges on his record when he was pulled over and fatally shot by police.

Wright, the 20-year-old black man who was shot by in an apparent accidental discharge, had previously been charged with first-degree aggravated robbery, fleeing from police, and possession of a handgun without a permit. Wright also had a warrant for his arrest out at the time of his fatal shooting after failing to appear in court for the fleeing and weapons charges.”

Yeah, a real role model. Well, at least he gave his family a nice Christmas present when the city settles out of court with them.

I would have charged the office with littering and let it go at that.

  12. Yes, adrenalin rush. You loose all fine motor skills, grab “whatever” and squeeze the trigger. There is a reason for nine- plus pound triggers on police weapons.

Better suggestion in the future is take tazers out of the mix and return to “halt or I’ll shoot!” commands.

  13. Female officers tend to shot first, ask questions later – out of absoulute fear. This seems to be the situation in this case. Also, Officer Potter seemed burned out and under a lot of stress. She lot it and abandoned police procedures required to complete the arrest.

She probably should have resigned at 25 yrs. The potential for this kind of error was too high for her to try and push through to get a 30 yr. pension.

The only benefit out of it all is Officer Potter did get rid of a serial criminal menace, Daunte Wright unfortunately, by accident.
However, the price she’s paying for a mistake has cost her everything. Pray for Officer Potter.

  14. Sad state of affairs. rich taylor has it right. The rest of you should seek vengeance on the moron that hired this woman. No matter how many times she’s pulled her Glock VS her taser it’ll be all new when the shit hits the fan. You just witnessed the end result. And no the prosecution did not meet the requirements for what she’s being charged for. That white woman was just linched.
